2004 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Case Maté, Elio Grasso, Piedmont
The soils here are sandy (like the Rocche of Renato Corino) and unsurprisingly this is masculine and brooding. The nose is opulent with a slightly gamey touch followed up by exotic spice notes, deep fruit and liquorice. The purity of the fruit is absolutely outstanding in a wine of great volume and beautiful balance. Very well focused with real weight and depth. Palate is refined yet totally Nebbiolo in character. Unique, a tour de force.
