Vilmart et Cie

Vilmart is fabulous top level grower Champagne from the Montagne de Reims that deserves attention from Champagne lovers. Run by the 5th and 6th generation of the Vilmart family, this dynamic father-son duo produces a maximum of 120,000 bottles from 12 plots (farmed biodynamically since the 70s) near their winery - about a fifth of what Krug produce for their vintage bottling alone.

All of their wines see some oak. They use some of the smallest foudres barrels in the world, totally unique in Champagne, made especially for them by the Tonnellerie-Rousseau. However, all of their wines have a characteristic purity of fruit, elegance and energy. None of the wines go through malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the natural acidity and vibrancy of the wines.

2021 Grand Cellier d'Or, Vilmart et Cie Dry | White | Sparkling | 12.5%

Grand Cellier d'Or is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinor Noir from vines around 45 years old on a chalky soil. The 2021 has a lovely clear crystalline character. Laurent described this as a lunar not a solar vintage and Vilmart wasn't effected much by the frosts. There is bright citrus fruit and white pepper with vibrancy and good tension. It has a long precise finish.

2017 Cœur de Cuvée, Vilmart et Cie Dry | White | Sparkling

Laurent’s father first made this now emblematic cuvée in 1989. As the name suggests, it is the heart of the juice from the press, offering up a complex and intense expression of the vintage. It is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir which comes from premier cru vineyards in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, and shows taut control and an elegant, complex structure. Malolactic fermentation is blocked, and the wine shows tension and grip, with a juicy, ripe citrus character and racy, saline freshness. The wine was matured in old oak, giving a softness and breadth on the palate.

2017 Blanc de Noirs Les Blanches Voies, Vilmart et Cie Dry | White | Sparkling | 12.5%

Vilmart's Blanc de Noirs is a brand new wine launched for the first time for the 2017 vintage. It is from the same Les Blanches Voies ungrafted old vines vineyard where their top Blanc de Blancs comes from. This spent 10 months in small oak barrels, 7 years on the lees and another 1.5 years ageing under cork before release. This has a gorgeous complex nose of sweet peaches, passionfruit, cranberry and hazelnut and on the palate, there's lots of depth and soft texture but such precision, tension and vibrancy, finishing very elegantly. An interesting and unique wine in the Vilmart range, although only 2,900 bottles were produced.

Chartogne-Taillet is located in Merfy, a historic and unique terroir situated northwest of Reims. Under the visionary guidance of Alexandre Chartogne, who was heavily influenced by his mentor Anselme Selosse, this estate has emerged as one of the most respected names in the grower Champagne movement. Bérêche et Fils, run by the dynamic brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérèche, is one of the most successful and acclaimed producers of Grower Champagne. They organically farm approximately 11 hectares of old vines spread across the Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne. The family's signature style blends absolute precision with artisanal tradition, notably ageing their base wines in oak barrels and conducting secondary fermentations under natural cork rather than crown caps to foster subtle micro-oxygenation. Their Champagnes - beautifully balanced among Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier - are celebrated for their incredible texture, harmony, mineral tension, and persistent freshness.

N/V Réserve Brut, Bérêche et Fils Dry | White | Sparkling | 12.5%

Jacques Lassaigne is a legendary artisanal estate based on the unique, steep Turonian chalk hill of Montgueux in the southern Aube region, historically dubbed the ‘Montrachet of Champagne’. Managed by the enigmatic Emmanuel Lassaigne since 1999, the small domaine specialises in creating remarkable, non-dosage Blanc de Blancs. Emmanuel’s approach places ‘the wine before the bubbles’, using minimal sulphur, fermenting with native yeasts in wood, and applying a lower pressure to create a softer, vinous texture. These Champagnes are famous for their exotic, tropical fruit aromas balanced by intense, saline, and chalky minerality, making them highly sought-after for food pairings.

2010 Millésime, Blanc de Blancs, Jacques Lassaigne (Late Disgorgement March 2024) Dry | White | Sparkling | 12%

This comes from Emmanuel's top three vineyards: Les Paluets (40%), Le Cotet (40%) and La Grande Côte (20%). Vinification in stainless steel preserves the pristine character of the fruit, and long ageing before disgorgement adds muscular depth.

N/V Les Vignes de Montegueux Extra Brut, Jacques Lassaigne Dry | White | Sparkling | 12%

100% Chardonnay. "One of Champagne's most exciting producers is Emmanuel Lassaigne" say William Kelley in his Wine Advocat report, noting his "style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric." He owns just 3.5 hecatres of old vine Chardonnay in the unsung village of Montgueux in the Aube. His wines have done much to put this region on the map, and he has achieved a lot in a short space of time. In 2002 he says he had just two customers. So to go from there to be recognised as on of Champagne's greats is no mean feat. He doesn't fine or filter, and uses very minimal sulphur dioxide. This is a blend of 41% 2016, 32% 2015 and 27% 2014.
