2018 'Escaroth' Pinot Noir, Blank Canvas Wines, Marlborough

With over thirty years’ experience making wine in Marlborough, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson really understand where to source the best fruit for their Blank Canvas project – and they’ve found just that in the Escaroth vineyard in the Taylors Pass area of the Awatere Valley. This is a charming yet powerful Marlborough Pinot Noir from Dijon clones planted on a north-facing slope. The low-yielding, dry-farmed site gives incredible intensity and allows Matt & Sophie to use a high degree of whole-bunch fermentation, adding to the complexity and structure of the wine. Maturation in oak adds a savoury, spicy element.
