2013 Barolo Vigna Santa Caterina, Guido Porro, Piedmont

From 35 year old vines planted on clay and limestone. It has a glorious nose: expressive, floral and elegant with dried rose petal. Lovely length, with some sweetness of tannins and a mouthwatering finish. One of his best efforts this vintage.

2013 Barolo Vigna Santa Caterina, Guido Porro, Piedmont

The 2013 Barolo Vigna S. Caterina opens with a captivating mélange of orange zest, Christmas cake, kirsch and rose petal notes. Medium in body, with a super-classic sense of structure and drive, the 2013 is another winner from Guido Porro. I would prefer to give it a few years to allow the tannins to soften.

Guido Porro

Guido Porro’s tiny winery has been passed from father to son for four generations. It was only in the 1980s that they started bottling their own Barolos, rather than selling the grapes on to the local cooperative. Their wines are perfect for anyone who loves traditional Barolo. Not beholden to trends or fads, Guido lets his wines take their own shape as top Barolo has done for years. He uses large oak barrels and lets his wines age as long as they need. There’s nothing rushed here.
