2008 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera, Elio Grasso, Piedmont

From vineyards by the house and winery, the cherry and blueberry aromas of this beautifully balanced wine are enticing. Almost Burgundian in style, this is a wine of restraint and power, shown in silky tannins and the herbal character on the palate which opens into layers of plum and dark cherry fruit that linger for some time. Elio Grasso

The story of Elio Grasso begins not in the winery, but in the city of Turin, where Elio Grasso was working at a bank when his winemaking grandfather died. From that moment, he returned to his roots – since 1978 working in his eponymous winery on just 18 acres of hills surrounding Monforte d’Alba.
