2007 Barolo Riserva Vignolo, Cavallotto, Piedmont

With all the presence and flavour intensity of San Giuseppe but with an injection of testosterone, the Vignolo Riserva is unmistakeably the more masculine of the two Crus. The higher sand content in the vineyard generates the super-charged tannins in its structure, but these are more than matched by the fruit intensity – huge, ripe foresty red fruits and orange served up with aged cured meats and smoke. Dazzling!
