2001 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera, Elio Grasso, Piedmont
A substantial looking wine in the glass, with dark, red cherry aromas, quite fragrant, with a floral edge too as well as an aromatic tea-like quality. There is a fine balance on the palate, with a deep core of fruit, damson, liquorice and a tarry intensity. This is a deep-knit style with fine, silken tannins holding the fruit in check. A masculine Barolo but the grip is far from overt - this shows its class with a long, lingering finish.
