2001 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Case Maté, Elio Grasso, Piedmont
Similar in appearance to the Gavarini, but the aromatics here are much more closed. The freshness of the vintage is self-evident on the palate - there is a deep core of fruit here akin to the Gavarini, yet this possesses a much firmer knit character, plenty of substance and stature. The balance of fruit and acidity is impeccable, this shows all the hallmarks of a great barolo, with deep sinewy, almost brooding fruit. Mineral nuances and an underlying earthiness add definition to this assertive style. The fruit suggests optimum ripeness and, given time, this will emerge as a grand barolo. Serious quality.
