Mark Chapoutier (Michel's grandfather) considered "Les Greffieux" the most elegant wine in Ermitage and considered the wines from this vineyard much more suitable for subtlety than for great power. Although not marketed as such, the vines are grown within a Clos, a walled vineyard benefiting from extra protection from the wind and heat storage in the dry walls. Showing a very deep purple core and a very Chapoutier-like restrained and complex, spicy nose, the 2010 "Les Greffieux" is full and round. The impressively precise spine of ripe, yet grippy, tannins and fresh acidity frame the cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate richness of the palate beautifully. The finish is very, very long indeed and moves towards ever-more delicate notes as it goes on.
