Valmur is pressed up against Les Clos; the contour of its slope, where much faces northwest, makes it slightly cooler than other parts of the grand cru. It’s like a stiff sea breeze, laced with salt and an iodine freshness. The scintillating line of acidity running through its length is tied to some fascinating orange blossom notes, making it one of the most complex in the vintage’s line up.
A fuller yellow with ripe orchard fruit, apricots and plums. More iodine in the background. A big solid block of fruit. Just enough acidity. At the moment the Valmur is less compelling than the Vaudésir, but all the building blocks are there.
The 2023 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a touch more expression than the Vaudésir. Orchard fruit, a light smoky scent, and a hint of petrichor develop in the glass. The palate is well balanced on the entry and quite powerful. Yet, I find the finish just missing some of the detail and mineralité of its peers and indeed, some of Droin's Premier Crus.
