Viña Errázuriz, a renowned Chilean winery, was founded in 1870 by Don Maximiano Errázuriz and is now run by his descendant, Eduardo Chadwick, who is the sixth generation of the family involved in the wine business. The vineyards are located in the Aconcagua Valley, known for its cool climate, moist Pacific Ocean breezes, and ideal conditions for growing grapes. One of the most innovative projects by Errázuriz in recent years is Las Pizarras. In 2005, when searching for the perfect place to make world class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (and now Syrah) in Chile, Eduardo Chadwick settled on the unique sites in Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa vineyards. These tiny and treasured Grand Cru plots contain unique schist rich soils and metamorphic slate rock (Las Pizarras in Spanish), which were discovered by leading wine geologist Françoise Vannier (world famous for her extensive work in mapping the great Burgundian vineyards). These soils are the most complex in the region, sitting 12km from the Pacific Ocean rolling hills with cooling breezes, it’s a viticulturalists paradise.
