Château Rieussec
Château Rieussec is one of Sauternes’ greatest names. Its complex, sweet and balanced wines are seen as some of the finest that the region produces. It enjoys Premier Cru Classé status, just a notch below d’Yquem, and alongside other prestigious estates like Guiraud and Suduiraut. It has benefitted from the expertise of Château Lafite-Rothschild since 1984 and as a consequence of their continued investment is a wine that performs consistently well each year. It dates back to the Carmelite monks in the 18th century and went through several changes of hands, including confiscation during the French Revolution. Domaines Baron-Rothschild significantly increased its vineyard holdings and Rieussec is now one of the largest estates in Sauternes, with 93 hectares on prime gravel and clay soils which spans both Sauternes and next door Fargues. It also sits on one of the highest points in the region - only Château d’Yquem is higher.
