2015 Château Thénac Rouge, Bergerac Red | Still | 14.5%

Château Thénac is undoubtedly the finest wine from Bergerac that we’ve come across. The 2015 is deep in colour with notes of ripe plum, dark chocolate, and bramble. There’s plenty of grip here, with vanilla spice and a hint of cedar, and fresh, lifted acidity. This really punches above its modest price tag.

2022 Château Lynch-Bages, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

Tasted April 2023. 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. 14.2% abv. Very tightly wound at this early stage with some a very firm structure for ageing. Once it opens up it is powerful and concentrated, with cassis, bramble and dark cherry. The tannins are bold and imposing at this stage, but there are more appetising savoury, cedar, menthol, licorice and tobacco flavours building on the palate. This is built to age, and will develop into a seriously impressive Pauillac.

Tasted April 2023. From the Bécot family of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, who sought out this prime clay-limestone spot in Castillon in 2001. This is in-keeping with the Clusel Roch style, with high-toned red fruit and a lithe body. It’s a fairly new addition to their range, having first separated out the parcel in 2018. It sits high up on the slope, facing eastwards, on limestone and schiste soils. It’s got more muscle than the Viallière, but remains more forward than the Grandes Places.

2023 Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Dönnhoff, Nahe Dry | White | Still | 12.5%

The Dellchen are the hollows that sit between cliffs that lift up from the Nahe, and this south-facing vineyard creates a wine that has astonishing intensity and complexity, with notes of ginger and more exotic spices. It benefits from an incredibly long hang time on the vines, and the resulting wine is brilliant.

2022 Semillon, Boekenhoutskloof, Franschhoek Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

As always, the Boekenhoutskloof Semillon is made with some of the oldest vines in the Cape with the two parcels from 1902 and 1942, and just a little dash of Muscat d'Alexandrie also from a 1902 plot to add aromatic lift. The wine is fermented in barrique and concrete egg with ageing in 70% new oak and the remainder in concrete eggs for texture. The 2022 Semillon is quite simply brilliant and idiosyncratic. A spicy nose of ginger, tangerine, white peach and lemon balm the palate opens out to reveal a certain creaminess from the oak yet still with a fine bead of acidity. The finish is bright and complex, this will age beautifully over the coming years.
