2018 AR Guentota Malbec, Belasco de Baquedano, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

A truly beautiful Malbec made from vines that are over 100 years old. The elevation of their vineyard gives incredible almost-minty, floral freshness to the wine, alongside dense blackberry, damson and blueberry fruit. There is subtle spiciness from a year in French oak and a wilder savoury, herbal character too.

Ready: 2022 - 2032
2016 Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos, Château Pajzos 50cl Bottle Sweet | White | Still | 11.5%

This, from the impressive 2016 vintage, is gorgeous. It is a blend of Furmint and Hárslevelű , the two greatest grape varieties of Tokaji. There’s tropical fruit, apricots, honeysuckle, and so much spice. And the sweetness is wonderfully balanced with bright acidity, and a minerality that comes from the volcanic soils of the Tokaji region.

Ready: 2022 - 2050
2019 Don Manuel Tannat, Tacama, Peru Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

A beautiful expression of Tannat, with rich, concentrated black fruit and a firm structure. The tannins are bold but balanced by fresh acidity and masses of complex flavours of vanilla, coffee, chocolate and fig.

Ready: 2022 - 2030
2019 Apla Red, Oenops Wines, Drama Red | Still

The 2019 Apla is really fragrant and peppery, with amazing purity to the palate and a lovely touch of grip. It’s a blend of Xinomavro, Limniona and Mavroudi, and comes from vineyards across the very north of Greece. Made with elegance in mind, it’s a brilliant summer red, with added depth: akin to a very good Cru Beaujolais. Utterly delicious.

Ready: 2021 - 2024
2019 Seña, Chadwick, Aconcagua Valley, Chile Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The 2019 Seña is a vibrant, ripe, yet incredibly refined red from this iconic estate. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenère, and 4% Petit Verdot, it shows refinement of tannins, poise, and a long and stony finish. There’s tons of energy here, and a slightly smoky finish. This is quintessentially Chilean, but with real poise.

Young: 2025 - 2048
2018 Cheval des Andes, Cheval Blanc/Terrazas de los Andes, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

The 2018 Cheval des Andes is the product of a cooler vintage, with wonderful purity and focus, but no loss of oomph. There’s a refinement to the tannins, and a mineral note on the finish. A brilliant Cheval des Andes.

Young: 2025 - 2045
2021 Chardonnay Las Pizarras, Errazuriz, Aconcagua Dry | White | Still

A cool year has left the 2021 Las Pizarras (arguably the pinnacle of Chardonnay production in Chile) deliciously fresh, mineral and stony with fresh lime, lemon curd and green apple fruit. Delicate white flower aromas and a tensile, steely line of acid throughout. Savoury notes linger on the long finish.

2019 Catena Zapata Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, Tupungato Dry | Red | Still

A trailblazing cuvee from Catena that focuses on the execptional terroir here. There's limestone soils and 1500m of elevation, leaving the wine with beautiful freshness and mineral tones. There are tons of aromatics, with vibrant red berry fruit and some floral blue fruits. There's chalkiness to the tannins and complex, dried herb notes. One of the most exciting wines coming out of Argentina.

Young: 2025 - 2050
2019 Petite Arvine Tradition, Domaine des Muses, Valais White | Still

The Petite Arvine is intense and savoury. There’s peaches here, and plenty of savoury spice, with notes of fresh ginger and a long and textured finish. Very saline on the finish: makes you reach for another glass.

Ready: 2021 - 2026
2019 Haut de Pierre Dézaley Grand Cru, Blaise Duboux, Switzerland Dry | White | Still

Les Hauts de Pierre is the pinnacle of Blaise’s production. It comes from a single parcel of old vine Chasselas, and is powerful, textured, and intense, almost reminiscent of top Burgundy. This 2019 is a little closed, but with texture and purity on the palate, it points to a long life ahead. The salinity and leesy complexity on the palate lasts an age, with notes of citrus and more savoury elements unfurling over time: this is a remarkable Swiss white.

2020 Apla White, Oenops Wines, Drama White | Still

This indigenous blend of Malagousia (60%), Assyrtiko (30%) and Roditis (10%) comes from a few parcels situated in different regions of Greece. The wine sees no oak and is aged for a few short months in tank and amphora to retain the purity and finesse of the varieties. The acidity is crisp and citrus driven, with a pithy grapefruit character on the finish. Expect white blossom florals, citrus and a subtle steeliness on this really impressive wine. A delight to drink and showcasing the best that Greece has to offer.

2019 Nicolás Catena Zapata, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

A pioneer in Argentina, Catena Zapata is a benchmark for Malbec. There's power here but plenty of stony, elegant restraint too. The tannins are grippy and chocolatey, and the fruit is dense and ripe, with light crunchier red fruit notes. Developing earthy, truffle notes, this is built for the long haul.

Young: 2025 - 2045
2021 Pinot Noir Las Pizarras, Errazuriz, Aconcagua Dry | Red | Still

Undoubtedly one of the finest Pinots ever to be produced in Chile, the cool conditions in 2021 have left Las Pizarras fresh and pure with wild strawberry and red cherry fruit. There’s lots of mineral, chalky complexity here around the juicy core of fruit.

Ready: 2023 - 2038
2020 Romelio, RETA, Maule Valley Dry | Red | Still

Romelio is found at the north of the Maule Valley, and is a field blend of mostly Malbec on decomposed granite. The grapes are picked early, meaning this wine is all about freshness and vibrancy. Delicious.

Ready: 2023 - 2030
2020 Quebrada Chalinga, RETA, Limarí Valley Dry | Red | Still

The 2020 Quebrada Chalinga is a Pinot Noir, grown 12km from the ocean in Limarí (Talinay), on granite and limestone soils. The vines were planted ungrafted in 2006. The wine is made with 50% whole bunch and was left in an infusion in an open vat. The maturation takes place in old oak barrels for 16 months. The result is full of tension, with moderately ripe fruit kept in check by fresh acidity and lifted notes of violet, citrus peel and chalk. There's a spiciness on the palate and an almost salty finish. Just over 5000 bottles were made.

Ready: 2023 - 2030
2017 Ar Guentota Malbec, Belasco de Baquedano, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

This is an impressive malbec from Belasco de Boquedano. On the nose notes of violets, pure berry fruit, and a hint of crushed herbs. There’s lovely freshness on the palate, here, with a lick of oak spice, and silky, enveloping tannins. Beautifully balanced, and absolutely delicious.

Ready: 2021 - 2030
2009 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

“The 2009 Malbec Argentino is a blend of the vineyards of Adrianna and Nicasia and is 20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit. The former is co-fermented with Viognier and the latter co-fermented with Cabernet Franc. It is aged in French oak barrels, of which 60% are new. It has a more opulent bouquet than the individual blends, with dark cherries, iodine, minerals and blueberry that are all beautifully defined. The palate has a dense, weighty entry with layers of ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed stone and a touch of graphite. The finish is supremely well-defined and focused, with immense length on the finish.” 95 points, Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

Ready: 2014 - 2026
2019 Quebrada Seca, RETA, Limarí Valley Dry | White | Still

This Chardonnay comes from vineyards planted in 1993 in a mini-appellation within Limari. The vines are 25km from the ocean and are on a mix of clay and limestone soil. The result is a slightly smoky, reductive white, but with the round ripeness of the new world. There is a distinct saline, iodine finish, very long and refreshing. Only old oak is used and maturation was 24 months with plenty of lees. Tiny production of around 4,500 bottles.

Deep in the glass, the nose exudes sumptuous black fruit and sweet cassis, allied to more herbal nuances. On the palate, cassis fruit leads the way, with notes of blackcurrant leaf, herbs, spice and cocoa. There is a cool-climate sense of precision, with fine tannins providing a gentle grip. Juicy, layered with an enlivening note of acidity revealed towards a long-drawn finish.

South Africa Growers' Tasting, Monday 18th September 2023, Glaziers Hall Ticket

Taste the wines of South Africa with their makers

South Africa is a region where interest climbs higher each year, and so we welcome new producers to the range all the time. We’re delighted to welcome many of these talented winemakers to London to share their wines (and their stories) in this tasting of many of the wines we feature. Some of the most established producers will make the trip, alongside rising stars, to provide a taste of the classics and the less familiar wines and styles here. The exceptional quality of the wines will be matched by the charm and wit of their creators - it is one of the most fun tastings, for both those new to these wines and those familiar.

2015 Caro, Barons de Rothschild/Catena, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

Catena and the Rothschilds continue to show what can be achieved in Mendoza. The 2015 Caro is superb: blackberries and plums, with notes of fresh herbs and smoke. It’s beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins and a freshness that gives a touch of salinity. Already impressive, and there’s clearly a long life ahead of this.

Ready: 2019 - 2030
2016 Caro, Barons de Rothschild/Catena, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

The 2016 Caro has notes of wild violets, fresh herbs, and crunchy blackcurrents, alondside a remarkable sense of poise and energy. The finish is long and mineral. It's no surprise that this wine is so highly prized every year.

2009 Chateau Musar Rouge, Serge Hochar, Bekaa Valley Dry | Red | Still | 14%

The 2009 Musar is a blend of approximately one third each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan. A spicy, complex nose with wild berries and dark chocolate leads onto a palate with lovely weight and texture. The finish is long and perfumed, with a hint of smokiness. Musar release their wines when they consider them ready, and this is undoubtedly delicious. But you needn’t be in a rush: this will certainly last well.

“Good deep ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, licorice and flowers, with sexy oak tones. Plush, seamless and sweet, offering terrific floral lift to its berry and dark chocolate flavors; shows an uncanny combination of richness and verve. This Malbec has the glossy texture and velvety tannins of a great Pomerol. The slowly rising, extremely long finish saturates the palate with lush fruit.”

"Incredible aromas of spice, cedar, walnut and dark berry. Floral too. Spectacular nose. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a racy and refined finish. Fresh and succulent. Made from old vines of mablec in Compuertas and cabernet sauvignon from Altamira. Such finesse. Half the normal production. 2011 Catena Zapata Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, Tupungato Dry | Red | Still

"The 2011 Malbec Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard is Malbec from the eponymous vineyard in Gualtallary close to 1,500 meters altitude fermented together with some Viognier exclusively from the plots where the soil is rich in calcium carbonate. The vineyard is planted at high density, 12,000 plants per hectare. If all the vintages of Adrianna are to dream about, this could be the most balanced, harmonious, elegant and mineral of them all. The sense of place here is tremendous, it transfers you to the Gualtallary vineyards at the foot of the Andes with its stony, chalky soils. There is a sense of harmony and subtlety like you rarely see. The wine dances on the tongue and seems light on its feet, yet has a hidden power and concentration that is noticeable on the finish. The flavors stay forever on the finish and the lips are salty. Otherworldy. Words do not do justice to this beauty. It goes far beyond the variety, I didn't think about Malbec, I thought about the place and forgot about the grapes. The flavors linger in your mouth forever. I'd love to encounter this wine again in ten years time." 98 Points, Luis Guttierez, The Wine Advocate

2013 Caro, Barons de Rothschild/Catena, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

Very primary at the moment on the nose, with dark fruits, violet notes, and a sprinkling of well-integrated sweet fruit. In the mouth the power builds, but the thread of freshness ensures a weightless quality. With excellent acidity, fine-grained tannins, and intensity of flavour, the 2013 Caro has all the characteristics required for a long life ahead.

2012 Nicasia Vineyard Malbec, Catena, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still | 14%

“The 2012 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard feels fresher and more harmonious than the 2011, when in reality the vintage character is the opposite. It is sourced from the vineyard that names the wine and that is located in Altamira. The Malbec grapes fermented in open barrels and cement vats with 15% whole-cluster Cabernet Franc. There is one extra level of precision and harmony here. It has an elegant nose and the palate almost reflects the tension in the skin of the grapes with its a velvety texture and great acidity. This is really tasty and long, it could be the best Nicasia ever produced. 8,000 bottles produced.”

2019 River, Adrianna Vineyard, Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

From vineyards at 4,400 ft in the Gualtallary sub-region. This is intensely purple with soft, ripe plum, red cherry and blueberry fruit flavours. There's lavender and woody herb notes creating complexity alongisde the subtle vanilla and cedar flavours from 20 months in partially new French oak. There's structure here with abundant, fine tannins. There's high altitude, breath taking freshness and masses of concentration.

2016 Cheval des Andes, Cheval Blanc/Terrazas de los Andes, Mendoza Dry | Red | Still

Floral and delicate on the nose, with beautiful aromatics of cherry and plum and violets. The palate is structured and very fine, with plenty of energy and texture, and a focussed, saline finish. This is wonderfully balanced and elegant.
