To the south of the city of Lyon the River Rhône reaches its wine heartlands, stretching sporadically between the cities of Vienne and Avignon. This is a land of two kings and many princes, with Syrah in the north and Grenache in the south supported and augmented by a huge range of different grape varieties. Such is the diversity of wine created within these 120 miles or so that it is easier to consider the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône separately, held together by the magnificent river.
