For many, Champagne is the drink that accompanies a lifetime’s special events. The names of producers, or Houses as they are known, trip off the tongue in a way that other fine wines don’t: Krug, Pol Roger, Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger. Made from any combination of the three grape varieties - the white Chardonnay, and the reds Pinots Noir and Meunier, the key to Champagne is in its blending and its aging: the best vintage Champagnes are sometimes only released a decade or more after the harvest.
