Bordeaux 2020

With masks in the vineyards, harvesters separated into bubbles, and social distancing in the cellars, 2020 is a year that no winemakers will want to repeat.

Yet the wines in 2020 are something to treasure. From a growing season with two distinct halves, I’ve tasted some astonishingly good wines, that show the very best of their revered terroirs.

2020 represents the third in a trilogy of impressive vintages from Bordeaux. Following the powerful 2018s, and the beautifully balanced 2019s, 2020 is a vintage that combines richness and power with bright freshness, with wines that consistently surprise and delight.

2020 Château Guillot-Clauzel, Pomerol

Dry | Red | Still

The 2020 Guillot-Clauzel is a stunning Pomerol from a property that's well worth seeking out. Ripe yet finely judged, it's pure Pomerol through and through. But with quantities well down, this will be short supply.

Magnum Dry | Red | Still

The 2020 GPL is a gorgeous wine. Notes of blackcurrent and wild flowers spring from the glass, while the palate is stony yet silky, with incredible tension yet richness of fruit. This seems to get better and better every year. A must buy.

2020 Château Haut-Bailly, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Dry | Red | Still

The 2020 Haut-Bailly is spectacular: a wine that demonstrates where this estate is heading. Complex, powerful, incredibly fine, and remarkably long, this is one of the wines of the vintage. Whisper this quietly, but it’s not far off the quality of the firsts: one to secure while you have the chance.

2020 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux

Dry | Red | Still

The Pavillon Rouge in 2020 reflects the remarkable effort made on its bigger brother: this is one of the finest Pavillons we've come across. Notes of violets and graphite on the nose give way to a palate with blue fruit, and a tightly wound core. This is an astonishing second wine, a real tour de force.

2020 Château L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol

Dry | Red | Still

One of the hottest properties in all of Bordeaux, L'Eglise-Clinet has a sainted position in the heart of Pomerol. Denis Durantou sadly passed away last year, but it seems that his family are continuing the impressive work. We haven't yet had the chance to taste this 2020.

2020 Château l'Evangile, Pomerol

Dry | Red | Still

There’s lots of creamy merlot character on the 2020 Evangile, a Pomerol which gets better every year we taste it. Lovely silkiness to the tannins, that build through and coat the palate. Very detailed and feel that slight savoury cabernet franc on the finish. Very pure and insanely long. Gets better and better.

2020 Château Duhart-Milon-Rothschild, Cru Classé Pauillac

Dry | Red | Still

Nice density and texture here - just restrained claret. Mouth watering, grippy tannins and also plenty of cassis fruit. Just a hint of leafiness and mint on the finish, and also a perfume element. Nicely done.

The 2020 Talbot is a beautiful St-Julien, that balances ripeness of fruit, silkiness of tannins, and a finely judged mouthfeel. This is a new level for this estate, which is clearly on the up. Secure it at this price, while you have the chance.

2020 Château Gloria, St-Julien

Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The 2020 Gloria is a really stunning St-Julien in 2020. There's an exuberence here, but also real poise and delicacy to the tannins. The palate is ample yet with a very fine thread of acidity, and the finish is long and stony. This tastes like a cru classe at double the price. Bravo.

The 2020 Cantenac-Brown is a huge achiever in 2020. Incredibly supple, silky, with stunning precision, it's possibly the finest Cantenac-Brown we've tasted. It's a must buy in the vintage.
