2015 Sirène de Giscours Charity Edition, Margaux Dry | Red | Still | 14%

This is a special late release from Château Giscours: their second wine from an outstanding vintage. The label is the winning design from a competition launched in March 2021, designed by James Albon, and 100% of the profits from the sale of this wine will be donated to The Drinks Trust’s Covid-19 relief fund, to support members of the UK hospitality industry adversely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. The wine itself is beautiful. Notes of violets and pure, dark Cabernet fruit on the nose, while the palate is detailed, with fine tannins and a savoury note underpinning the core of ripe fruit. The finish is chiselled and intense, with lots of energy shining through. This demonstrates why 2015 in Margaux is such a legendary vintage: it’s a stunning wine, for an excellent cause.

2022 Château Les Cruzelles, Lalande de Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

Tasted April 2023. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. 14.6% ABV. 50% new oak. Picked from 1st September. Aromatic and floral on the nose with bright black berry fruit and some fresh cherries. Opulent style of fruit compared to Le Chenade this year, with plenty of ripe tannin and a seam of stony freshness. Layered with stone and dried petals.

2020 Château Montaiguillon, Montagne-St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

Montaiguillon’s 2020 is another resounding success, continuing a string of excellent vintages at the estate. It is a deep ruby colour with notes of spiced plums, cassis and blackberries on the nose. There’s a savoury, graphite note woven through the juicy, sumptuous palate. Its rounded tannins are already integrated with the plump fruit, and the finish has a fresh, balanced length, the likes of which you’d expect from wines with much bigger price tags.

2016 Château Langoa Barton, St-Julien (2025 Ex-Château release) Dry | Red | Still | 13%

The 2016 Langoa Barton is a real star from St-Julien. A beautifully classical nose of bramble fruit, sandalwood and graphite with accents of violets and wild herbs. The palate is supple and full of freshness with a certain muscularity and depth which builds to the long, savoury finish with tinges of tobacco and pencil shavings.

2021 Château La Garde, Pessac-Léognan Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Tasted April 2022. Seriously impressive in 2021, La Garde has good concentration and a velvet, almost creamy texture. The flavours are full of bramble, blackcurrant, red plum and violets, and there's a developing silkiness to the tannins.

2022 Guidalberto, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri, Tuscany Red | Still | 13.5%

The 2022 is a superb vintage from this Tuscan estate, based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. There is a richness of red and black berry fruits combining with leather, liquorice and cinnamon spice. The tannins are plush and velvety and there is a refreshing acidity that lingers on the finish, displaying this wine's pedigree.

Ready: 2025 - 2038
2015 Château Thénac Rouge, Bergerac Red | Still | 14.5%

Château Thénac is undoubtedly the finest wine from Bergerac that we’ve come across. The 2015 is deep in colour with notes of ripe plum, dark chocolate, and bramble. There’s plenty of grip here, with vanilla spice and a hint of cedar, and fresh, lifted acidity. This really punches above its modest price tag.

2020 Château Les Cruzelles, Lalande de Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

From the Durantou family of wines, this is a bottle that will never disappoint. There's a coolness here, but still so much fruit, and wonderful tannic structure. For a wine at this price point this will age brilliantly - everyone should have a bottle or two in their cellar.

2020 Château Tronquoy, St-Estèphe (2025 Ex-Château release) Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The 2020 Tronquoy is one of the best wines we've tasted from this estate. It offers cocoa dusted cherry, graphite, wild herbs, green tobacco. Sleek and sinewy in the palate, a modern style with a lot of energy and precision while notes of graphite, violets and black tea add complexity. Very pure and sinewy in style with iodine and kelp notes – lovely tension and fluidity. A wine you'll want a few cases of for the years to come.

2019 Château La Gaffelière, 1er Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

The 2019 La Gaffeliere is a drop-dead gorgeous St-Emilion: the best wine I have tasted from this historic estate. Violets on the nose, with a wonderfully refined, focussed palate. This is so long, and so moreish. A top buy in 2019.

2020 Château Ormes de Pez, Cru Bourgeois St-Estèphe Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Ormes de Pez is the kind of wine we buy year in, year out En Primeur here at Lay & Wheeler. Made by one of Bordeaux's most talented teams - the team behind Lynch-Bages - it's a wine that delivers spectacularly for its price. Savoury and focused in 2020, there's beautiful energy here: this is classic claret that will never cease to impress. In short, it's a cornerstone of your cellar in the years to come.

A wine to challenge the brilliance of the 2015 and 2016 at this estate, notes of small plums and blackberries, and wild violets. The palate is silky and voluminous but not overblown, and there’s charming detailing on the finish. An estate you should buy every year.

2022 Château Puyblanquet, Grand Cru St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Tasted April 2023. This has the same bright red fruit character as La Gaffeliere, and has a lovely silky texture, with summer fruits on the palate and a chalky note to the finish. Balanced and pure, with a long finish and some taut, densely-packed tannin. Puyblanquet is a brilliant wine this year and a complete bargain.

2010 Château de Fonbel, Grand Cru St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Owned by the Vauthier family, of Château Ausone fame, Fonbel rarely fails to impress and in 2010 they have produced a truly beautiful wine. On the nose, notes of attractively pure dark fruit come through. On the palate, the core of fruit is fresh and fragrant and the tannins are well-refined, soft and expressive, giving this a deliciously layered texture. Poised and mineral on the finish, this offers excellent value for money.

2022 Château Meyney, Cru Bourgeois St-Estèphe Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Tasted April 2023. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot. Once again, Meyney is performing at the level of a classed growth, and remains brilliant value as a result. This estate, sandwiched between Montrose and Calon-Ségur, is in a great spot to manage the warm, dry conditions in 2022. The clay soils bring a welcome coolness, likewise their proximity to the river. There's a significant proportion of Petit Verdot, giving depth, concentration and spice. It's taut and structured, with ripe tannins, around a core of fleshy black fruit. We can't recommend it highly enough.

2010 Château La Croix de Gay, Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, and it has turned out well in 2010, producing a richly fruity, elegant style of Pomerol with loads of berry fruit, cedar wood and roasted herbs as well as hints of coffee bean and cedar. Rich, medium to full-bodied , but never losing its finesse (which is usually the style of La Croix de Gay), this wine should drink nicely for up to 15 years. 91 points, Robert Parker

2009 La Croix de Beaucaillou, St-Julien Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Described by Bruno Borie at Ducru-Beaucaillou as being another expression of Ducru, rather than simply a second wine, this is a wine that has certainly seen an enormous increase in quality over recent vintages.

Very attractive and pure, perfumed, blueberry and blackcurrant nose, with creamy notes and a touch of graphite. On palate the fruit is pure and focused. The tannins are fine and accessible and the finish is fresh and of good fruit length. Gently expressed, very well balanced and likely to represent a fabulous quality to price ratio.

2009 Chapelle d'Ausone, St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Almost as deep as the Grand Vin, the aromas are scented and floral, with appealing dark cherry fruit to the fore. Revealing impressive intensity, with dark cherry and berry, there is the same fragrant and floral lift as evidenced in Ausone itself. Juicy and vibrant in style, this is an impressive Chapelle – very intense, and mineral to the finish, with a lush quality to the fruit.

2009 Château Ormes de Pez, Cru Bourgeois St-Estèphe Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Another top ‘Cru Bourgeois’ that is owned and run by the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages and which makes rich, fine quality wines. Attractive on the nose, with notes of cassis and wet stones. There is a creamy touch to the fruit on the palate and a rich nature. None-the-less, the minerality that one comes to expect from St-Estèphe adds a delightful balancing freshness, giving this a sense of elegance in an opulent vintage.

Very intense in the glass with floral-edged, dark-berry fruit and a pure, sweet note of ripeness. The palate reveals a soft, fruit-laden attack and glorious depth, with layer upon layer of sumptuous fruit. The 2012 Insignia Proprietary Red is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, all aged 24 months in 100% new French oak. The vintage was of such high quality and quantity that 17,500 cases were produced. A magnificent Insignia that will be bottled in several months, it boasts an opaque purple color as well as fabulous notes of graphite, blackberries, blackcurrant liqueur, camphor, barbecue smoke and spice box. Rich, full-bodied and opulent with plenty of tannin and structure lurking beneath the extravagant generosity of fruit, this stunning 2012 should drink well for 25-30+ years.”

With 30 hectares of vineyards situated next to those of Lagrange (and averaging 40 years old), winemaking expertise straight from over-achieving super-second Ducru-Beaucaillou (and the investment that comes with it), Lalande-Borie is really starting to show great potential. The blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc has produced a lovely wine for medium-term ageing. It is already very approachable and displays a juicy and fresh texture, dominated by black cherries and a hint of red fruits.

2010 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

"This is one of my all-time favorite wines from Domaine de Chevalier, a silky, rather classic Pessac-Leognan with notes of scorched earth, tobacco leaf and black and red currants, but no hard edges. Fragrant, complex aromatics are followed by a savory, expansively flavored wine made from a final blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine hit 13.5% natural alcohol, which must certainly be among the highest they have ever achieved, even eclipsing the 2009. An opulent, precocious style of wine that seems much more developed, complex and delicious than I thought from barrel, this beauty can be drunk in 5-6 years or cellared for 20 or more. 2004 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13%

2009 Château La Croix de Gay, Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 14%

“What a wonderful 2009 from La Croix de Gay, as a new chapter opens in its history. It is blessed with a beautiful, very pure bouquet with floral red cherries strawberry and a touch of marmalade and apricot blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannins, great precision with fine mineralite and length. Superb.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, 92 Points (January 2010)

“A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from this well-situated vineyard on the plateau of Pomerol… [I]t displays plenty of kirsch, sweet cherries and red currants along with some sandy/loamy soil and roasted herb notes in a very sexy, up-front, lush, medium to full-bodied style. There’s not a hard edge to be found in this La Croix de Gay…” Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90 Points (February 2012)

2009 Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Dense and opaque in the glass. With coaxing, aromas of sweet cassis, blackcurrant leaf and wet gravel reluctantly emerge. The initial impression is one of cool, fresh ripe fruit. This is so streamlined, rich and dense (perhaps more so than many young Lafite of the last decade) and has staggering purity. A textural style, on account of silken, round tannins and seamless, with pure fruit of soft-skinned blackcurrant, allied to notes of tobacco leaf and graphite. There is a racy, focused linear nature to this vintage, with concentration gradually building across the palate. Long, refined and driven, this is a bold Lafite with considerable power, yet always retaining hallmark refinement. Just how great this is, time will tell. Exceptional.

In this vintage Carruades comprises near equal proportions of Cabernet and Merlot, with around 10% of Cabernet Franc. The quality of the second wine of Lafite continues to impress: deep appearance in the glass, with a smooth flowing texture and ample dark mulberry and currant fruit. The 2005 seems more generous than previous Carruades with a pleasing weight and a peppery touch to the tannins. Fresh and pure, this is classic pauillac.

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, picked in four separate passes through the vineyards. Winemaker Alexandre Thienpont accurately describes the texture of the tannins as 'cashmere' and the wine as 'archi-classique'. Great purity and elegance, with a tightrope quality, an unusually delicate concentration, which promises a great future. Legendary.

Once one of the most highly thought of properties in Bordeaux at the time of the 1855 Classification, Château Rauzan-Ségla's reputation declined over the years until it was bought by Chanel in 1993. Since then, substantial investment and the influence of talented wine-maker John Kolassa has led to this property undergoing a major turn-around and it now produces some of the finest Margaux in any vintage. Charming nose of creamy cassis fruit. The palate shows a fresh, vibrant fruit character with black and red fruit spreading across the mid-palate. Beautifully textured with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannin giving length to this appealing Rauzan.

This is an excellent second wine from Les Carmes Haut-Brion, undoubtedly one of the most-improved estate in Pessac-Léognan in recent years. Charming, with sweet-ripe fruit characters awoken in the glass. On the palate, this has a glossy, plum and damson nature, offset by enlivening violet notes. Picked at optimum ripeness following cool nights in the vineyard, which led to high natural acids and a fresh structure, the palate was immediately perfumed. A wonderfully expressive and complex nose is jam packed with dark plummy fruit, but there is a really appealing meaty and spicy note. The palate is opulent and gorgeously smooth, with the most amazing mouthfeel. Sweet black fruit, chocolate and coffee notes are underpinned by massive, superfine tannins and balanced by just enough acid to retain freshness. A wine of depth, balance and truly seductive nature.

The vintage conditions at Vieux Château Certan were somewhat reminiscent of 1988, with a dry but not too hot summer that favoured Cabernet Franc. The lovely fruit intensity on the mid-palate is framed by silky, ethereal tannins and a vein of acidity that make this wine both elegant and concentrated. Exquisitely balanced, with a persistent finish.

2009 Château d'Armailhac, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Perfumed on the nose, this is restrained, with a cool, menthol aspect to its ripe creamy fruit. There is a terrific freshness and purity to this vintage, as well as wonderfully ripe blackcurrant fruit. A linear style, with plenty of racy, fine tannins courtesy of an elevated, impeccable Cabernet component. Again, another classically proportioned style with impressive length – surely one of the finest vintages for d’Armailhac.

Pure, lifted cassis nose - ripe and perfumed. Lovely grace through the mid-palate, giving a layered feel to the fresh berry fruit-laden palate. The tannins are gently mineral on a finish of fresh, fruit skin grip. An elegant Langoa, which shows a classy lightness of touch.

One can't help but be impressed by Château Ausone, set at the top of a tortuously twisted road, with its caves and chapelle dug into the limestone cliff. It is a fittingly romantic location for one of the world's greatest wines. A blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, this is dark and brooding in the glass. The nose is exceedingly rich and dense, with attractive black cherry and bramble fruit characters. The tannins are firm and structured, yet ripe and well integrated with the rich core of dark cherry, cassis and damson fruit. A stony minerality and a dart of refreshing acidity reflect the terroir and lend backbone to the rich succulent fruit.

Hard to believe but the quality here is still on the up! Jean-Guillaume Prats is clearly maximising the full potential of this Cabernet-dominant cuvée. In fact, the assemblage here comprises 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. In the glass, a wine of great colour with pronounced tobacco nuances as well as clove and cinnamon spice on the nose. The superlative quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon really shines through, defined, structured and powerful. Despite great extract and depth, the balance here is so fine it can be described as elegant despite the power and personality that it exudes. A fine, long finish – a truly memorable Cos.

Splendid in 2003. A mini Ornellaia, this second wine is made up of a Bordeaux blend of Merlot (44%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), Cabernet Franc (13%) and Petit Verdot (13%). 2020 saw rather changeable weather with very long periods followed by heavy rainfall and drops in temperature, resulting in a longer harvest than usual to enable the different varieties were picked at optimum ripeness and condition. A combination of hand picking, sorting tables at the winery as well as the addition of an optical sorter in 2016 has resulted in a wine that is of impressive quality. The wine is aged in French barriques (25% new) for 15 months before being bottled and remains in bottle for a futher 6 months prior to release. The winemaker believes the 2020 is reminiscent of 2018, 2013 and 2010, and having tasted all three recently, this wine is destined for great things. Expect red plums and red wild berry perfume, combined with liquorice spice and herbal undertones.

When asked whether the Château was having to change anything to compensate for climate change, Marie Descotis, who heads up the Château's research and development department, explained that their terroir is proving to be perfect for the somewhat warmer and drier conditions over the last few years, allowing their Cabernet Sauvignon to flourish. The blend this year is made up of 86% of this Cabernet, 10% Merlot and the rest split between Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The resultant wine is the most concentrated they have ever produced, yet it is also incredibly poised and balanced. Dark berry fruits, notes of woodsmoke and spice come through on the nose. The palate is immediately fresh and pure, with a layered sense of fine tannin, depth and power. There is a graphite-like grip to the structure, a definite minerality and a core of cool-natured, classic fruit. Despite the concentration and density in the wine, the balance is such as to give it an almost approachable sensation. Mas de Daumas Gassac’s quirky blend has earned it many fans over the years. It really works in 2020, with its heady, dark, black fruit aromas. The main component of Cabernet Sauvignon gives it structure and tannic backbone, whilst Merlot fleshes out the mid-palate. Spiced notes from Petit Verdot and a herbaceous lift from Cabernet Franc help add complexity. So far, so Bordelais… But the Mas de Daumas has an extra edge, engendered through the baking southern sun of the Languedoc, and the unusual components of Tannat and Pinot Noir that also play supporting roles. The overall impression is a rich, full-bodied wine, with a dried herb-scented lift, and fine, peppery tannins.

Made from a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot, this is an open and expressive wine, with a glossy, approachable dark fruit nature. On the palate the fine, ripe tannins give this a powerful and full-bodied nature but, when combined with the freshness of this vintage, they make this a stylistically very well-balanced example. Very long on the finish, but fruit- rather than tannin-driven.

Ready: 2017 - 2030
2010 Château Berliquet, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Appealingly fragrant on the nose, Berliquet 2010 exhibits a robust tannic structure and full-bodied ripe fruit with hints of fresh herbaceousness and spicy cloves. Some minerality and savoury character on the lingering finish. This is a good example of modern, rich and full St Emilion.

Ready: 2015 - 2025
2010 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

This wine presents a counterpoint to some of the opaquely structured and tannic wines from the left bank in this vintage. Owned and made by the team responsible for Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Haut-Batailley has a bright, expressive and fluid concentration of fruit. The structure, weight and tannin are presented with a lightness of touch, class and elegance. This is thoughtful and considered winemaking.

Ready: 2017 - 2030
2010 Château Léoville-Poyferré, Cru Classé St-Julien Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Léoville-Poyferré have been exhibiting the class of their terroir in increasingly impressive fashion and the 2010 is no exception. Stunning purity of fruit dominates the nose, with crême de cassis brought into the ethereal by lighter, more floral notes of freshly picked violets. Anyone able to move on from this beguiling perfume will find a rich, almost chocolatey palate with ripe cherries, reminiscent of black forest gâteau. This impressive wine is completed by a very long finish - surely one of the wines of the vintage?

Ready: 2017 - 2035
2010 Carruades de Château Lafite, Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

A higher than normal percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon was used in the blend (73%), chiefly because the quality of the Cabernet grapes was superior to the Merlot. The remaining 27% was Merlot though, adding flesh to the classic Cabernet bones, which are unmistakeable this year. Aged largely in new oak barrels, the resultant wine is dominated by raw power, allied to a savoury complexity that hints at a long and distinguished life. The palate itself is closed as yet, but shows very tightly-wound, attractive fruit. Very Cabernet despite the Merlot content. A marzipan note comes through on the finish, balancing the acidity that makes for an appetizing whole. Very fresh, and very long.

2009 Château Pape Clément, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Ripe and opulently styled, with a rich, glossy texture that is well-balanced by a lighter touch to the tannin and overall mid-weight nature of the palate. Extroverted in character, it also carries a layered depth and multidimensional complexity to give an accomplished, complete wine.

2009 Château Maucaillou, Cru Bourgeois Moulis Dry | Red | Still | 14%

This has an inviting nose of almost-crystalline red fruit, with an earthy, almost black truffle like, mineral backdrop. On the palate, this shows great ripeness and harmony at this early stage, as well as a long, refreshing finish. Assured and elegant, an excellent example of how good the 2009 vintage can be.

2009 Château La Lagune, Cru Classé Haut-Médoc Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Thanks to huge investment in both vineyard and winery from M. Frey, La Lagune is improving with every vintage. With notes crushed bramble fruit, woodsmoke and violets on the nose, this is really enticing. The palate has a rich, firm feel, with sweet, grippy tannin, lots of black berry fruit and a long complex finish of vanilla and liquorice.

2009 Château Durfort-Vivens, Cru Classé Margaux Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The nose is heady and opulent and dominated by intense cassis fruit. Plenty of volume here, the fruit is super ripe, but not at all over done, and the tannins are integrated into the wine. This has some structure, but it is the fruit that makes this wine. The finish is long and it is only here the tannins finally show. This is very persuasive.

2009 Château Charmail, Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Almost exotic on the nose, with plenty of cassis, lead pencil and spice. Classic in style, with the ripe fruit nature kept nicely in check by a fine framework of tannin and acidity. While approachable in youth, this will give so much more with a little time in the bottle.

2009 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Cru Classé St-Julien Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The 2009 Ducru Beaucaillou will eclipse the brilliant wines produced in 2005, 2003 and 2000. It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the 2009. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. Full-bodied and intense with Ducru's inimitable elegance and purity, it should firm up in the bottle after 7-10 years of cellaring and last for 40-50 years. Magnificent!

2009 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13%

Opaque, brooding in hue, the aromas suggest scented, spice-laden cassis, black fruit and cardamom. The abundant juicy berry fruit on the palate shows a distinct minty lift. Seriously intense, layered and opulent, there is simply layer upon layer of gloriously textured fruit, with elements of mocha, chocolate and toast. Effortless – the tannins are superfine, sweet and round. Will this ever close down? This is a wine with a gradually building sense of concentration and a distinct mineral, gravelly touch on the finish. So refined and well-balanced, this is a wine that has the potential to be one of two or three best Mouton vintages since the legendary 1986.

Scented, sweet, restrained berry aromas with a cedary aspect. The success of the Grand Vin is shared here. This is admirably fresh and pure with a juicy, dark berry nature and a surprisingly layered intensity, all of which is coupled with notes of blackcurrant leaf and toast. Streamlined and harmonious, the tannins are round and unobtrusive, making for a glossy, appealing Carruades. Very polished, with fine intensity and length, this is comfortably the finest Carruades ever made. A very attractive, classical style.

2007 Château Calon-Ségur, Cru Classé St-Estèphe Dry | Red | Still | 13%

The redoubtable Madame Gasqueton continues to produce some of the most appealing and finest wines not just of St-Estèphe but the entire Médoc. This deeply coloured wine is marked by noticeable freshness on both the nose and palate. Currant and dark berry fruits dominate in a palate that is full and long. The tannins are almost invisible which only adds to the appeal. This is atypical for a st-éstèphe being almost accessible now due to the fine balance and deep fruit overlaying the tannins. A fine result for Calon-Ségur.

2006 Château Bellevue, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

A six hectare property that is located opposite Château Angélus. Bellevue
is under the same stewardship as Pavie-Macquin, with the highly
reputed Nicolas Thienpont and his capable team responsible for
winemaking. A 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc assemblage, Bellevue
reveals a rich, generous nose, with open, luscious, spicy fruit on the
palate. As usual, this is a wine with a solid structure, yet we found a
genuine refinement in the wine and juicy flamboyance.

2006 Clos du Marquis, St-Julien Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Made with a higher Merlot content than its “big brother”, the esteemed Château Léoville-Las-Cases,
Clos du Marquis has a great sense of richness. Fragrant raspberry characters come through on the

2006 Château Pibran, Cru Bourgeois Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 12.5%

An exemplary cru bourgeois Pauillac that is produced by the wine making team at Pichon Longueville (Baron) led by Christian Seely and the talented technical director Jean-René Matignon. A 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvée that displays juicy, cassis inspired scents and flavours. We admire the freshness and purity of this wine which, as Jean-René explained, benefits from a gentle approach in vinification that avoids over-extraction. However Pibran is not without substance and the harmony of the 2006 is impressive.

Mature: 2011 - 2017
2006 Château Giscours, Cru Classé Margaux Dry | Red | Still | 13%

Attractive bramble and currant fruit notes on the nose, with floral nuances. On the palate, the tannins are fine grained and there is a core of pure, concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry fruit. This wine is all about purity, a characteristic emphasised by a vein of freshness with cool, stony minerality running throughout. This is a near-perfect example of textbook margaux. Very good indeed.

Ready: 2015 - 2026
2006 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Deep in the glass, with ripe currant and dark berry aromas. A layered, natural style on the palate, effortless and round, with a bright acidity. There is a sense of fine precision here, and a distinct minerality. Very textural with a fine ripeness to the expansive berry fruit. Mid-weight, pure and refined, Les Forts lacks the muscle or structure of the grand vin, but works so well, with its harmony and striking purity. Long and poised.

2006 Château Léoville-Las-Cases, Cru Classé St-Julien Dry | Red | Still | 13%

A terrific Las Cases that is clearly one of the wines of the Left Bank vintage. Although analytical profiles are not the ‘be all and end all’ in determining quality, it is interesting to note regisseur Bruno Rolland comments that alcohol, acidity and tannin levels of the 2006 exceed those achieved in 2005, a fabulous wine in an extraordinary vintage. Very dark, almost opaque, Scents of cassis vie with floral notes. The palate is voluminous, the first impression is of power and strength, yet there is a seamless quality and extraordinary length in this Las Cases which is brimming with cassis, blueberry and Victoria plum flavours. Strength allied to elegance, power with finesse. Tasted blind, this would be more reminiscent of Pauillac than Saint-Julien. Fine quality from an estate with an impeccable track record.

2005 Clos De Sarpe, St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 176: Clearly a wine made for future generations, Clos de Sarpe, with its tendency for tiny yields of under 25 hectoliters per hectare, has fashioned a 1,000 case blend of 85% Merlot and the rest old vine Cabernet Franc. Over recent vintages, this wine has been among the most concentrated and formidably tannic and backward made in Bordeaux. A claret for those with 19th century tastes, it offers good purity, ripe tannin, and an extraordinary display of concentration, extract, power, and tannic clout. The 2005 is a mammoth yet incredibly well-balanced St.-Emilion that represents an anomaly in modern day winemaking. It is a pleasure to see a proprietor push the envelope and create a wine that will be appreciated for 40-50 years. Classic sweet black cherry, licorice, roasted herb, and underbrush characteristics are present in this formidable, full-bodied, powerful wine. 95+ points.

2005 Château Labégorce, Cru Bourgeois Margaux Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Tasted no less than five times during April and impressive on every occasion. A wine that portrays the Margaux terroir ‘to the letter’ with its floral character, vibrance and finesse. Finely honed and precise with carefully handled vinification that avoids over-extraction and manipulation. Since acquiring the estate in 1989, Hubert Perrado has renovated the château and invested in the vineyard with resulting improvement and consistency in the property’s wines. A delicious and expressive 2005 that marries concentration with finesse. One of the leading crus bourgeois of the 2005 vintage.

2005 Château Pape Clément, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

RObert Parker, Wine Advocate # 176: Probably the greatest Pape-Clement ever made, the dense purple-colored 2005 (a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits sumptuous notes of smoky scorched earth, graphite, melted licorice, and blackberries. Once past the exquisite perfume, the wine reveals full body, extraordinary concentration, plenty of chocolate, smoke, cassis, and blackberry flavors, and that unmistakable volcanic ash-like earthiness that comes from this appellation. The tannins are slightly sweeter than those found in most northern Medocs, but this is still a backward, large-scaled effort that requires 7-8 years of cellaring. 98 points.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 176: We haven’t seen a Clinet this good since the late Jean-Michel Arcaute’s stunning duo of 1989 and 1990. This dense ruby/purple-tinged, exotic 2005 boasts soaring aromas of roasted herbs, plums, black currants, and caramelized chocolate. Savory, broad, and expansive with sensational purity, intensity, and length, this beauty possesses so much fruit and glycerin that it nearly hides the substantial tannins. 92 points.

2005 Château Clerc Milon, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13%

It is immediately apparent that this is from the same winemaking stable as first growth Mouton-Rothschild. The blend here comprises 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, a little Petit Verdot and the seldom seen Carmenère. Sweet, open attractive red and dark berry fruits on the nose, with a note of creamy vanillin. There is a sense of opulence on the palate with characters of soft fleshy summer fruits, blackcurrant and toast. It reveals good substance on the mid-palate, but is nonetheless much more elegant than the norm here with no harsh edges, just a little firm, yet fine tannin on the finish. A more than worthy inclusion – our first purchase for some time. Very good indeed.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 176: Sweet, toasty, oaky notes interwoven with hints of black olives, blackberries, cassis, and spice box are found in this densely saturated ruby/purple-hued 2005. While rich, with impressive concentration and purity, it is also tannic, full-bodied, and painfully backward and foreboding. This is another long-term prospect that will require patience. 91 points.

Displays volume and concentration but with a sumptuous, cushioned texture and combines structure with textbook margaux flair, elegance and charm. A flattering du Tertre with a sensuous lacy feel. Proprietor Eric Albada Jelgersma’s purchase of the property (and Giscours) has raised the profile of this estate and lifted quality to its best ever levels. A delightful du Tertre that is strongly recommended.

2005 Château Haut-Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13%

On tasting it becomes immediately apparent that Haut-Batailley is crafted in much the same way as its stable partner, Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The assemblage is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot – marginally more Cabernet than the norm. The aromas here suggest leafy blackcurrant and plum with a fresh accent. The palate is open with good richness for its level. Mid-weight with a lovely sense of vibrance and balance. A deft silky texture with characters of pure dark berry and stone-fruits render this immensely appealing. The tannins are once more finely-expressed, exuding a gentle, precise grip. Finely-tuned, cedary and elegant – very much in keeping with the style of Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

The nose displays some of the capsicum aromas as well as ripe, dark-berry fruits associated with Cabernet, while the palate is ample, mouthfilling and with plenty of obvious attraction. Soft, deep berry flavours and fine gravely notes make for a complex yet generous feel. A very harmonious wine with a purity of fruit that is common to all the Rothschild properties in this vintage.

An emotional vintage for Château Margaux, which proved to be Director Paul Pontallier’s finale due to his untimely death in early 2016, has created a truly remarkable wine. This is the epitome of Margaux and of Cabernet Sauvignon, which constitutes 87% of the blend, showing huge power alongside incredible elegance. Made of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is immediately open and fragrant on the nose, with notes of white flowers alongside cassis and plum. On the palate, this seems effortlessly balanced: a core of ripe attractive fruit hemmed in by very fine tannins and a zip of acidity. Incredibly charming, it won us all over.

2011 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux Dry | Red | Still | 12.5%

Headily aromatic on the nose, with notes reminiscent of black forest gâteau, a fragrance imparted by a higher proportion of Petit Verdot than usual. On the palate, there is delicious freshness and a lovely sense of purity to the fruit. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, giving structure to cassis and morello cherry fruit. This has a lot of density and power, which Marie Descotis attributes to the drought and the small size of the grapes as a result. She believes that this has never before been as close in style and quality to the grand vin.

2010 Château d'Armailhac, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

This year the blend is a mixture of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. We tasted it at Mouton in a flight with its relatives and, like most, it displayed an austere Cabernet character to the fore. This slightly antiseptic quality gives rise to a powerful mid-palate, showing the (desirable) mix of ripe dark fruit, crisp acidity and mouthfilling tannins. This balance is crucial this year and is distinctly different to the opulence of 2009. The jury is still out as to which is superior but both will be long-lived and are at the top of the quality tree.

The objective was not only to produce the finest red wine possible from Chile, but also to create a wine that reflected the unique terroir of the Alto Maipo Valley. Since its inaugural vintage, it has earned a noteworthy reputation as one of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignons. The grapes are carefully selected from different old vine blocks of the highly regarded Puente Alto vineyard, located in the foothills of the majestic Andes mountain range. “Don Melchor is a blend of the expressions of each of its blocks… by joining them together we achieve a better, more complete, more complex wine that reflects the personality of the Puente Alto vineyard”, explains winemaker Enrique Tirado. Don Melchor is one of the great examples of top quality Cabernet Sauvignon from this prized corner of the New World.

The 2008 Don Melchor is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc that is aged for 15 months in French oak. Crisp, precise and attractive aromas of cassis, black cherry and dark plum are supported by rich mocha and toasty oak. There are fine, grippy tannins enswathed in juicy blackberry fruit, accompanied by a subtle hint of iodine and black olive, leading to a freshly spiced finish. This is a lovely, focused wine of great weight and depth that will be drinking well into 2020 and beyond.

2015 Othello, Dominus Estate, Napa Valley Red | Still | 14.5%

The 2015 Othello is a brilliant example of this wine for those in the know: the best made yet, surely. Dark cassis and plum on the nose with hints of tapenade and spice are encompassed in ripe, voluptuous tannins, with a fine thread of acidity running through the wine. A brilliant introduction to the Californian wines of Christian Moueix, and a wine that will prove harder and harder to secure.

Quintessential st-julien, Ducru-Beaucaillou’s characteristics are of the most wonderful elegance and breeding. The 2004 is a masterclass in classic bordeaux – and in particular the lithe, sensuous, fine-grained sophistication of traditional claret. The 2004 vintage comprises 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot. The late and greatly revered Jean-Eugène Borie once commented to me that he intended his legacy to the next generation to be that Ducru should have acquired a reputation for being one of the most elegant wines of the region. I think that he would have been very satisfied and proud of Bruno and Sabine’s glorious 2004 vintage. This is beautifully harmonious st-julien, a wine with a glossy sheen and poised refinement.

2004 Château Pichon-Longueville (Baron), Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Château Pichon-Longueville (Baron) is a property that has seen immense improvements in the quality of its wines from the early 1990s and most particularly since 2000. Substantial investment and expert management, both under Jean-Michel Cazes (of Lynch Bages fame) and more recently under Christian Seely, have led to this property rivalling and in some cases surpassing its sister property of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Opaque and dense with expressive, deep berry characters on the nose. There is lovely weight of fruit on the palate and a very nicely balanced sense of proportion. This displays a glamorous lusciousness and opulence. A Pauillac of the highest quality. Robert Parker Score: 93 points

2002 Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 12.5%

Cabernet leads the way in imperious fashion, accounting for 87% of the blend, the balance Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc. The colour is suitably deep, with aromas revealing ripe-scented black fruit, with a more mineral-derived note. Concentrated on the palate with well-expressed, layered berry fruits. Very fine fruit quality indeed- no doubt due to the near perfect conditions afforded to Cabernet in the latter stages of the vintage. There is a very fine-nature to the tannins; grippy structure evident though not forced. A very pleasing sense of balance and harmony. A bright future beckons for a classically proportioned vintage for Lafite. A little less than half of Lafite’s production made it into the Grand Vin in this vintage.

"Flirting with perfection, the 2012 Dominus is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Five thousand cases were produced, a relatively modest amount from this large vineyard’s big crop. Christian Moueix told me that there was plenty of heat in 2012, but there were no excessive hot spells that can plague Napa Valley vintners during the growing season and harvest. This wine’s opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a beautiful nose of sweet crème de cassis, a touch of background oak (only 40% new oak is used), spice box, cedarwood, black cherries and a hint of spring flowers. The complex, intense aromatics are followed by a deep, opulent, multidimensional, full-bodied wine with not a hard edge to be found. Everything is seamlessly crafted in this beauty and the vintage’s abundant richness is well-displayed. This 2012 can be drunk in its exuberant youthfulness or cellared for another 20-25 years." 99 points, Robert Parker.

Ornellaia and illustrious neighbours Sassicaia eschew Sangiovese altogether and use only Cabernets Sauvignon & Franc and Merlot. Le Serre Nuove blends fruit from its own plots of vines to that of younger vines in the Ornellaia vineyards. Stretching out West toards the Sea,they benefit from the salty sea breeze cooling effect. This is truly a wine crafted as meticulously as the flagship wine. 45% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot, the 2010 Serre Nuove displays wonderful purity and depth of flavour, including plum, mocha, espresso and dark cherries. Beau-Séjour Bécot is situated in an enviable position on the limestone plateau of St-Emilion, nestled between Canon, Duffau-Lagarosse and Clos Fortet. It remains excellent value. Their 2015 is a mixture of the rich, hedonistic fruit of the vintage, and the cool mineral character innate to their vineyard. There's tons of dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, with licorice and violet building on the generous palate. The tannins are very fine and their chalky nature is softening with time in bottle. This is a property on the rise.

The 2011 second wine from Comtesse Lalande exhibits a dark nose of rich fruit, lifted by fresh leafy notes, courtesy of a proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in the blend. The vineyards of Duhart-Milon lie alongside those of Château Lafite-Rothschild, which was why the Rothschild family took the opportunity to purchase the property in 1962. Since then, they have poured huge amounts of investment into the estate, planting and replanting vines and installing new cellars. Reserved on the nose at this stage of its development, 2011 Duhart nonetheless displays a firm tannic structure to frame the soft, juicy fruit character. Fresh and juicy in style with excellent length, this is an excellent example of the chateau's style.

The blend for Pichon in this vintage is made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon (82%), with the balance being Merlot. Christian Seely describes this vintage as being one in which tannin management was key, "it was necessary to have a light hand on extraction to ensure harmony and balance", something which they appear to have achieved. Immediately closed on the nose, but opening out to show classic Pauillac notes of cassis and graphite. On the palate, there is a sense of mineral freshness leading through into a mouthfilling and fine tannic structure that frames layers of velvety dark berry fruit. Beautifully long and fresh, with spice notes on the finish, this is undoubtedly one of the stars of the vintage.

2011 Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 12.5%

Christophe Salin, director of Barons de Rothschild has been very forthright about the way in which pricing will work this year, indicating that there should be a substantial cut in price for this wine compared with last year. "With Lafite we have the luxury of being able to sell at a high price, but we want to play by the rules and listen to the market. We don’t want to be individualists – Bordeaux is a collective work; we have power and duties so we need to play as a team." The wine is a very simple blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. 2011 Lafite-Rothschild is a huge, powerful effort that manages levels of concentration rarely equalled in this vintage as well as a velvety, nuanced style and wonderful balance, refined tannins and incredible length. This is a wine that starts big, and grows in stature all the time during the multi-layered finish. It may be hard to dethrone.

Château L'Eglise-Clinet has consistently been one of the top-performers in recent vintages and this is no exception - this is finely judged and consummate wine-making. On the palate, the fruit is rich and almost-chocolatey, leading onto an intense, rich palate of dark berry fruit. The tannic frame of this wine is immense, giving this a dense texture, but this is offset by a linear, mineral freshness. The finish is long and pure, leaving one with an overwhelming sense of balance and poise. Truly great.

2010 Château Pavie-Macquin, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

"This is always an extremely masculine, dense, burly wine, and the 2010, which tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol (just slightly under that of the 2009), has a final blend of 80% Merlot and the rest virtually all Cabernet Franc, with just 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Loads of crushed rock and chalkiness, along with licorice, black truffle, smoked game and black fruits dominate the aromatics and flavor. Backward, formidably endowed, full-bodied and almost atypically massive and huge, with gargantuan extraction, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs to forget about for close to a decade. The oak is pushed far into the background and the tannins are extremely silky, but the intensity of the wine is profound and the finish lingers for close to 55 seconds. This wine is ripe yet delicate, powerful yet stylish, and essentially resembles a remarkable fashion design from a house of haute couture. 2010 Château Cos d'Estournel, Cru Classé St-Estèphe Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

While not known for his rigid following of standard Bordeaux stylistic norms, Jean-Guillaume Prats has made an extraordinary wine this year - even if it is not, perhaps, classic St-Estèphe. Vinified at a lower temperature than normal in order to preserve freshness, Jean-Guillaume described his 2010 Cos as "aristocratic". Somewhat heady, but pleasing on the nose, with notes of dark fruit and a hint of sweet toasty oak. On the palate this is concentrated and intense, with a pure dark berry core, expressively fine tannins and a vein of almost-mineral freshness giving it some lift and poise. While still tending towards the opulent, this maintains a taut and linear frame that provides some real style and class.

2009 Château Cos d'Estournel, Cru Classé St-Estèphe Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

One of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted, the monumental 2009 Cos d'Estournel has lived up to its pre-bottling potential. A remarkable effort from winemaking guru Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot (33%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (2%) was cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts an inky/black/purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of white flowers interwoven with blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, charcoal and graphite. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary purity, balance and intensity as well as perfect equilibrium, and a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, wood and alcohol. An iconic wine as well as a remarkable achievement, it is the greatest Cos d'Estournel ever produced. It is approachable enough at present that one could appreciate it with several hours of decanting, but it will not hit its prime for a decade, and should age effortlessly for a half century.

A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2009 La Mission-Haut-Brion stood out as one of the most exceptional young wines I had ever tasted from barrel, and its greatness has been confirmed in the bottle. A remarkable effort from the Dillon family, this is another large-scaled La Mission that tips the scales at 15% alcohol. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (47% of each) and the rest Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a magnificent bouquet of truffles, scorched earth, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, subtle smoke and spring flowers. The wine-s remarkable concentration offers up an unctuous/viscous texture, a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, sweet, sumptuous, nearly over-the-top flavors and massive density. Perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime La Mission-Haut-Brion, the 2009 will take its place alongside the many great wines made here since the early 1920s. The good news is that there are nearly 6,000 cases of the 2009. It should last for 50-75+ years. Given the wine-s unctuosity and sweetness of the tannin, I would have no problem drinking it in about 5-6 years.

2008 Château Certan de May, Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

This is one of the most consistently impressive wines from the J.P. Moueix stable over the last few vintages. Very fragrant and fresh, with dark plum, cherry and almost black forest-fruits. This is a juicy, elegant Pomerol with a wealth of layered, lush fruit tied to a tight mineral core. There is a tautness about this style which draws towards a cherry-stone mineral quality at the finish. This property does not quite make it into the limelight as it should, but one can see why the Moueix team serve it after Lafleur-Petrus and Hosanna in their annual trade tasting. It is a more structural, assertive Pomerol. Very elegant, offering good potential for cellarage. Fine-tuned, classic in style, with terrific purity and a long, persistent finish. Comprising 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, with the balance Cabernet Franc, this is deep and opaque in the glass. The aromas here are instantly appealing, sweet, scented cassis, with background notes of toast. A deep, dense core of fruit lies at the heart of this wine, which shows such effortless intensity. Layer upon layer of sweet ripe black fruit, currant and cherry, framed in toasted oak. Gravelly, mineral notes course across a seamless palate. This is not of blockbuster proportion, but does not lack substance. Wonderfully harmonious and precise, the tannins are silken, almost slippery, yet adding fine definition. A long, pure, stylish ‘Cabernet driven’ Cos that shows in a far juicier, fleshier manner than many recent vintages. This is of First Growth stature without a shadow of a doubt and ranks as one of the wines of the vintage. Robert Parker: 94-96

A classic blend of 46% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot, this is one of our favourites from the vintage – and a bargain considering the status, and quality, of the first wine. With a pure nose of sweet strawberry and raspberry, the palate is fresh, with well-judged, fine tannins and ample concentration. Just 8,000 cases produced in 2013, this wine comes recommended.

A new label for this wine is set to be unveiled in May, broadcasting the intention of flamboyant-proprietor Bruno Borie, for this wine to be seen as a stand-alone, rather than the second wine of Ducru-Beaucaillou. Quietly brooding on the nose, with notes of dense, smoky fruit. On the palate, this is a serious wine: layered and ripe, with plenty of fine tannins, giving this a velvety texture. Good length, with a touch of mineral freshness on the finish.

2010 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 14%

"Bizarre as it may sound, the 2010 Les Forts de Latour is also the finest I have ever tasted from this selection, which comes from specific vineyards, not really so much a second wine as just another wine from estate holdings. A blend of 72.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27.5% Merlot that represents 40% of the production, this astonishing wine hit 14.3% natural alcohol. Extremely ripe and rich, it reminds me of the 1982 on steroids (and that wine is still drinking great 30 years after the vintage). Sensational notes of graphite, crushed rocks, black fruits, camphor and damp forest notes are present in this expansive, savory, full-throttle wine, which is better than many vintages of the great Latour itself from the past. (That may be a heretical statement, but it’s the truth as I see it.) This wine needs a good 5-6 years of cellaring and should age for three decades at minimum, given the fact that the 1982 is in terrific form and wasn’t this concentrated or prodigious. Classic on the nose, with notes of ripe red cherry, charcoal and cassis. The palate has a lovely depth and freshness that is only found in top vintages. Dense in the glass, with aromas of fragrant ripe, soft-skinned berries and lead pencil. This is at once mouthfilling, with a layered, opulent nature and a lushness from the Merlot content. Ample cassis fruit with sleek, finely expressed tannins and notes of mocha and milk chocolate. Not the precision or lift of the Grand Vin, but an impressive Petit Mouton nonetheless.

2004 Château Palmer, Cru Classé Margaux Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

Much has been made of the commune of Margaux in 2004, which was after all a vintage that seemed to play into the hands of the typically more feminine, perfumed styles with which it is associated. Château Palmer itself was one of the great successes, with Robert Parker suggesting in his Wine Advocate publication that it rivalled even Château Margaux for wine of the vintage within the appellation. The Château believes that the style of this wine is akin to their fine 1996 and most certainly this is a 2004 that oozes class, with mulberry and plum in abundance. This is a structural Palmer, with a fresh, ample quality and impressive texture and a bold core of lush fruit. Robert Parker Score: 94 points

A little over half of the production went into the Grand Vin, a compelling blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc and the remainder Petit Verdot. Fine, scented aromas of black fruit and red berry here. The palate exudes sweet ripe berry fruits and cassis. Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly in the ascendancy, though there is a succulence equally evident. In 2002, Montrose is broad-shouldered with real substance and fine yet assertive tannins. It possesses a true sense of balance with a positive, lingering finish. Finely poised and clearly delineated, there is no doubt that Montrose is on form in this vintage.

2010 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

"An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes harvested between the end of September and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15% natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade of cellaring, and that’s assuming it doesn’t close down over the next few years. This is a 50- to 75-year wine from one of the half-dozen or so most compulsive and obsessive proprietors in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right? Talk about an estate that is on top of its game! Pontet-Canet’s 2010 is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of their most recent perfect wine, the 2009. Kudos to Pontet-Canet!" 100 points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2010 Château l'Evangile, Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 15%

"Another spectacular effort from L’Evangile, the 2010 is a close rival to the 2009 and should be fascinating to compare with that vintage over the next 30 or so years. Stunningly rich and black/purple in color, the 2010 L’Evangile offers up the tell-tale floral note as well as black raspberry jam intermixed with cassis and kirsch. There are also ethereal floral notes and a hint of background oak. The pH is slightly above average (3.7 versus the pH of 4.0 that the 2009 and 2000 possessed). This is a massive, rich, very impressive L’Evangile, and readers should take note of the “+” in my rating, which could certainly push this wine way up there. Remarkably, I was shocked when I learned that this wine was aged in 100% new oak, as the oak is a background element in this blockbuster l’Evangile. Forget it for 3-5 years, and drink it over the following 30-40. " 98+ points, Robert Parker

Château Palmer have described 2010 as having the potential to be "legendary vintage" and there is no doubt that they have made a monumental wine. A large percentage of Merlot (54%) in the blend pushed the alcohol levels to an all time high of 14.5%, though this is veiled by the immense concentration of the fruit and tannin, as well as the freshness that is so typical of this vintage. Layered and intense, this is a brooding wine, with bold tannins and a dense fruit core. Masculine in character, this will need considerable time to resolve, but should do so in fine style.

2009 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13%

Offering creamy, sweet juicy dark red fruit and toast on the nose, this elegant Pichon reveals soft, layered fruit and a distinct lush core on the mid-palate. It seems distinct from the style of recent Pichon vintages – an exercise in refinement, underscored by fine, gently gripping tannins that lend a velvety length. A pure and stylish vintage.

2009 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 14%

Suitably inky, opaque and bright in the glass. Restrained on the nose, with gently violet-scented ripe berry fruit. Abundant, wonderfully ripe dark berries on the palate, which is tightly packed with fruit within a muscular frame. A very assertive style, yet with sublime refinement to the sweet tannins. There is a stunning minerality here, grippy almost, with notes of graphite lending complexity to racy, Cabernet-dominated fruit. Long and pure, this is an imposing yet restrained Latour, with a dry, savoury finish. An undeniably great Latour with impeccable balance and poise.

2004 Château l'Evangile, Pomerol Dry | Red | Still | 13%

Bright deep crimson, like a crimson velvet robe; intense blackcurrant fruit on the nose and an edge of blackcurrant leaf, interwoven by a lovely meaty note and a hint of vanilla - very complex and intertwined. Terrific rich fruit attack, sustained by spicy mid palate and good fruit concentration to the finish, with no dryness even though the tannins are quite evident. Pure and refreshing.

2017 Leeu Passant Dry Red, Mullineux Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

The culmination of the other wines of the estate is the Dry Red, inspired by the South African reds of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. At this time, wines labelled as Cabernet Sauvignon would frequently have a considerable proportion of Cinsault, and this is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Cinsault, with grapes from the aforementioned vineyards included in the blend. In its youth, this is structured and intense, but with bottle age it’s sure to flourish.

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Inglenook, Rutherford, Napa Valley Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

The 2018 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of purity and refinement. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 3.5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot, and 0.5% Petit Verdot, this is a wine that shows remarkable poise, with finely judged tannins, and a long, saline finish. This is so Bordelais in style: blind, you could mistake it for top Cru Classé. Just a hint of more exuberant fruit on the mid-palate gives away its origins.

A blend of 57% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. The Shiraz comes from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa valleys, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from selected vineyards in both regions, some of which were planted by Cyril Henschke at his Eden Valley property in the 1960s. It’s pure and smoky on the palate, with lovely energy, and an impressive mineral finish. This punches well above its weight.

A blend of 85% Carignano and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, on the nose there are notes of tapenade and rosemary, alongside a deep core of dark cherries. “A star on the vast stage that is the Antinori wine empire, the 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso is a seamless and stunning wine. It’s one of those rare wines that inspires praise and excited conversation from the very second you raise the glass to your nose. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Baritone aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, cured meat, sweet spice, Spanish cedar, mocha and wild Mediterranean herbs come together in graceful unity. In the mouth, the wine is exceedingly smooth and decadent with a long velvety trail that softly coats the palate. This is one for the cellar."

"The 2015 Château Rocheyron, owned by Silvio Denz and Peter Sisseck, is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc cropped at 35 hl/ha between 6-17 October. Matured in 30% new oak, the nose was primal but well defined, very pure with layers of dark cherries and crème de cassis. The palate is smooth on the entry, very fresh and harmonious, and the tannins are fine and supple in the mouth with a fine seam of acidity and a long, caressing finish. The Cabernet Franc works beautifully here, lending complexity and personality. This is a wonderful Saint Emilion that is imbued with Sisseck's craftsmanship." 2010 Château Troplong-Mondot, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion Dry | Red | Still | 16%

"inky, bluish/black/purple, with notes of spring flowers, licorice, camphor, graphite, and a boatload of blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit, this is a powerful, full-bodied Troplong Mondot. All the building components of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol are judiciously and impressively integrated. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc made by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente with the consultancy help of Michel Rolland. I-m not sure what the heady alcohol level is in Troplong Mondot in 2010 (it certainly must be in the 15%+ range), but it is well-concealed behind the extravagant, richness, full-bodied power, and pure nobility of this majestic wine. Forget this for 5-7 years and drink it over the following three decades.

An absolutely stunning wine from this estate, which seems to be on a mission to produce exquisite world-class wines with enormous aging potential, the 2010 is showing better from bottle than it even did from barrel." 99 points, Robert Parker

2010 Château Pichon-Longueville (Baron), Cru Classé Pauillac Dry | Red | Still | 13.5%

"Administrator Christian Seeley thinks the 2010 is the greatest Pichon Longueville Baron he has ever made, equaling some of the estate’s colossal wines from vintages such as 1989 and 1990. It was certainly showing well when I stopped by the chateau in January. Opaque purple, with loads of charcoal, licorice, incense and some exotic Asian spices along with abundant cassis liqueur, blackberry and hints of roasted coffee and spring flowers, it is full-bodied and opulent, with relatively high tannins, but they have sweetened up considerably and seem less aggressive than they did from barrel. The oak is clearly pushed to the background by the wine’s wealth of fruit, glycerin and full-bodied texture. This sensational Pichon Longueville Baron needs 5-6 years of cellaring, and should keep 30+ years." 97+ points, Robert Parker

Haut-Bailly continues its excellent form. This wine combines its hallmark elegant and flowing style in a bolder and more structured manner. A swathe of pure, essence-like fruit within a fine grain tannic framework, gives the characteristic Pessac ‘matte’ texture. Closed and tightly packed at this embryonic stage, the intensity, depth and long finish, allied with refinement and freshness, give a wine with great promise.

Viticulture consultant Kees van Leeuwen describes this as the greatest Cheval vintage since the stunning 2000. Inky blackcurrant with a purple crimson rim. Intense cassis becomes gradually more fragrant in the glass, but very tight - like buried treasure. Tannins are well-defined yet very smooth, fanning out to fill the mouth, and Cabernet Franc (55%, Merlot45%) lends freshness to the concentration. Fruit and oak perfectly balanced.
