2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes

Comprising a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% of more obscure varieties, the 2007 reveals a lovely density in the glass, all youthful crimson and purple – certainly opaque. Aromatically this is a very giving style, with fresh raspberry, cherry and notes of garrigue. On the palate it is rich and bold with tremendous elegance. There is a seamlessness to this vintage and a more marked character of sweet ripe cherry, perhaps even a note of liquorice and a certain savoury accent. Layered, persistent, there is just a suggestion of the sweet density that one notes from fruit harvested on the cusp of sur-maturité. A very fine Clos des Papes, intense yet refined, effortless in nature. Sensational, a joy to taste in youth, should prove extraordinary with bottle age.
