Vins doux naturels are something of a Rasteau speciality. Made from late-harvested fruit, and fortified in the same way as a port, they are fascinating wines, though seldom as good as this example. By harvesting only the ripest, healthiest fruit and the smallest berries, producer Jérôme Bressy has produced a wine with the most bewitching aromas. Scented violets, blackberry and spice, with a remarkable sense of depth. Fresh black fruit to the fore on the palate, very blueberry in character, sloes too. The texture is velvety, rich but poised. Very, very good indeed. Jérôme only lightly fortifies this, meaning that the weight is naturally achieved and the resultant wine is drier than anticipated. Well worth snapping up. The result of meticulous efforts.
