2019 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary, El Enemigo, Mendoza

2019 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary, El Enemigo, Mendoza

This is the project of Adrianna Catena of the pioneering Catena family, and Alejandro Vigil, the chief winemaker at Catena Zapata. It's a single vineyard from the top sub region of Gualtallary and is Cabernet Franc. This is fine, elegant, and full of the brightness and clarity of the best high altitude wines. There's 15% Malbec adding extra purple and blue fruit, and lots of chalky, saline sensations. Herbal notes, crushed rock and violet combine to create a layered, silky, savoury wine.

El Enemigo

A winery that has reached cult level status in the world of Argentinian wine is without doubt, El Enemigo. This is the story of Cabernet Franc grown at altitude. They have the freshness and energy of mountain wines, yet so much depth and intensity.

“El Enemigo” which translates to “the enemy” is a nod to the internal battles they faced in the pursuit of excellence and to challenging the status quo. Hence their decision to initially focus on Cabernet Franc.

El Enemigo is a joint venture between Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena, and winemaker Alejandro Vigil, who also moonlights as Catena Zapata’s head winemaker. Founded in 2010, the vineyards are located in Luján de Cuyo, located at altitudes ranging between 900 and 1500 metres.
