2004 Clos des Andes, Bodega Poesia, Mendoza

Bodega Poesia was established in 1998 by one of Pomerol's youngest and most exciting winemakers. Helene Garcin-Leveque was only 30 when she and her husband, Patrice, bought a single vineyard plot in the Lujan de Cuyo district of Mendoza in Argentina. Planted in 1935 with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, Helene and her husband recognised the quality of this vineyard on their very first visit, so they withdrew their funding from the project that had originally brought them to Argentina and invested it in this 13 hectare plot. Produced from 100% Malbec that has been aged for 12 months in French oak, this has an impressive depth of colour in the glass (not always a great omen). However, both palate and nose are quite simply fantastic. There is an array of sweet-scented berry aromas, raspberries, blackberries, plums and floral notes to name just a few. The palate too is pure and intense with a slight pepper and spice edge being added to the cornucopia of fruits. All this intensity is off-set but suave, elegant tannins and a fresh dart of mineral acidity. This was a unanimous and immediate inclusion in the offer and one that was only made more certain when we learned of the price!
