This is an astonishing wine in 2022, and remarkable value. Just 12.1% in alcohol, this should be 13.5% based on sugars, but the conversions were low. On schist, this is bloody and meaty, with stunning tannins. A baby Cote-Rotie. Such an astonishing wine for the price.

Donovan Rall's unwooded Syrah comes from two separate north-facing vineyards on the same brown schist soils, not far from Porseleinberg. Deceptively dark in colour, this is fragrant, ethereal, rose petal perfumed Syrah that was fermented with 50% whole clusters. Juicy, spicy and peppery with garrigue, bramble and red berry flavours. 2023-29
