2019 The Chocolate Block, Boekenhoutskloof

A blend of 71% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and just a dash of Viognier, the 2019 Chocolate Block is a wonderfully pure, elegant expression from the heart of the Swartland. Red berry fruit and wild flowers drift from the glass, while the palate shows crystalline purity and a beautifully mineral finish. It punches way above its weight: that they manage to produce this in such quantities is one of the wonders of the wine world.

2019 The Chocolate Block, Boekenhoutskloof

Based in Franschhoek since 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most feted wineries. After some years in the wilderness, the current operation was started by a group including winemaker Marc Kent in 1993 – they quickly put themselves on the map, making some of South Africa’s most expressive wines. Indeed, many would call Boekenhoutskloof the vanguard of South Africa’s new wave movement. Now it’s Gottfried Mocke at the helm, arguably South Africa’s most talented winemaker, and the wines have never been better.
