2018 Semillon, Boekenhoutskloof, Franschhoek

Perhaps surprisingly, one of the most exciting wines in the cellar is their Semillon. It comes from some of the Cape’s oldest vineyards, planted in 1902 and 1942, along with a drop of Muscat, also planted in 1902. Gottfried uses eggs, barriques, and now amphorae for this wine, that’s one of the most textured, complex we know. It has to be tried.

2018 Semillon, Boekenhoutskloof, Franschhoek

Based in Franschhoek since 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most feted wineries. After some years in the wilderness, the current operation was started by a group including winemaker Marc Kent in 1993 – they quickly put themselves on the map, making some of South Africa’s most expressive wines. Indeed, many would call Boekenhoutskloof the vanguard of South Africa’s new wave movement. Now it’s Gottfried Mocke at the helm, arguably South Africa’s most talented winemaker, and the wines have never been better.
