Waitaki is closer to the coast in North Otago, an hour or so drive away from Bannockburn. The influence here is maritime, and there's limestone in the soils, meaning the profile of the wine varies considerably to Valli's Central Otago bottlings. The fruit style is exotic and dark, almost cassis-like. It's silky and concentrated, but keeps the savoury Valli signature, and gains a salty bite towards the finish thanks to the limestone, maritime terroir. Bold initially, but lively and chalky with savoury spice on the finish. No whole bunch this vintage.
