2023 Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay, Penfolds, South Australia

2023 Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay, Penfolds, South Australia

Chardonnay is the hidden gem of the Penfolds range, easily overlooked given the prestige of their red wines. It's made from grapes from a range of brilliant cool-climate sites in Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills. As a result it has tons of complexity and intricacy in its fruit flavours, with nectarine, zesty pink grapefruit, and richer tropical fruit. There are delicate baking spices, a nutty undertone and chalky notes on the palate. This is a fantastic example of the new modern Aussie Chardonnay, balancing rich, zesty fruit with careful use of reduction and oak.

Tasting notes

Confident and poised, this is a big-bodied Chardonnay that stops short of being either blowsy or bloated. The entry is fruit-forward, which translates to a complex flavour meld of lemon zest and grapefruit offset by honeysuckle and nougat. The mid-palate texture has a rich creaminess, tapered by a tasty savoury note that adds a keen edge to the fruitiness. Stepping away from the lithe mod-Oz style of Chardonnay, this is purposely fleshy and more fulsome – a style well-suited to a few years of cellaring.
