2021 Shiraz Block 73, Spring Farm, Jim Barry, Clare Valley

2021 Shiraz Block 73, Spring Farm, Jim Barry, Clare Valley

A block located at 495 metres of altitude with a south-westerly aspect the terroir here is dark brown loam soils over slate. This is a finessed and elegant style of Syrah with notes of black olive, pepper, and violets. There is a fleshy character to the ripe bramble fruit with fine, supple tannins. It is a modern, vibrant wine that speaks of class and finesse over power and opulence.

Tasting notes

This polished red draws you in with aromas of blue plums, blackberries, fresh figs and tiramisu. Ripe and full-bodied, it’s full of velvety tannins and perfumed dark-fruit notes with tension on the long and composed finish.

Jim Barry

Jim Barry was just the 17th qualified winemaker in Australia, and the very first working in the Clare Valley. It was Jim Barry’s trailblazing efforts that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling.

And with his flagship red, the Armagh Shiraz, he managed to swim against the tide by producing an ultra-premium Shiraz: the wine was conceptualised when the Australian government was simultaneously giving subsidies to pull out vines.

These days, Jim’s grandchildren Tom, Sam, and Olivia are the third generation at the helm of the family estate, while second-generation Peter Barry remains heavily involved. In recent years, the Barry family has kept Jim's vision alive, and spearheaded a slow evolution to an even purer and more elegant style of winemaking.
