From a higher vineyard than Pajana, this has more clay in the soil. As such, it’s a purer, more typical expression of Ginestra, and of Monforte. There’s a lot of intensity and grip here, and also lovely salinity on the finish.

Ciabot Mentin was planted in Ginestra in 1978, between 390 and 420 metres above sea level – relatively high in Barolo – but mostly with an eastern exposure which increases the freshness and elegance of this wine. The 2019 is indeed cool, with a fresh violet aroma, some meatiness and black cherry fruit, and an almost rosemary aromatic character. Its extreme youth is highlighted by crisp acidity and sleek, velvety tannins. A very precise wine, still complex and ripe but also full of potential for the long haul.
