2017 Roero, Bric Valdiana, Giovanni Almondo

From a single vineyard, this puts many a Babaresco to shame. So elegantly styled, with crunchy berry fruit and hints of rose petal and lavender, there's a long and silky finish here. Brilliantly balanced and very long indeed.

Giovanni Almondo

This Roero estate is quickly making headlines as a source of not only great value Nebbiolo, just across the Tanaro river from Barbaresco, but also stunning Arneis, one of the great local white grapes of Piedmont. Run by brothers Stefano and Federico with their father, Domenico, they've 600 years of family history here, though they only started to make wine since removing fruit trees to make way for vines in 1980. It's an estate to watch closely.
