2016 Primitivo di Salento Riserva, Es Red, Gianfranco Fino, Puglia

The estate has 16 parcels of old vines, each of which is vinified separately. Gianfranco then tastes each parcel at the end of nine months ageing, and his favourite is earmarked for the Es Red. It spends three more months in barrel, before spending four years in bottle before release. The 2016 is astonishing. There are smokey, gamey notes, a core of intense yet fresh dark fruit, and then tons of mineral purity. This is a spectacularly long, complex, profound wine. This is surely the greatest Primitivo there is.
