2015 Barolo, Pio Cesare, Piedmont

Notes of orange rind and wild strawberries swirl from the glass, with plenty of spice definition, too. The palate is structured yet soft, with endearing salinity and drive on the palate. Very long and finessed, this is a benchmark for the estate.

TASTING NOTES

Complex aromas of smoke, ash and dark fruits with a precision and intensity. Layered and gorgeous. Loads of dark fruit and perfume. Full-bodied with round and wonderfully polished tannins. Wonderful length and richness. Goes on for minutes. Try in 2023 but already good now.

Pio Cesare

Age is everything for the family-owned and run winery of Pio Cesare. The winery was founded over a century ago, in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and is now run by his descendants, the Boffa family. The winery sits squarely on top of ancient Roman walls in the heart of the town of Alba. With seventy hectares spread across the region, Pio Cesare have access to superior terroir. This, coupled with their traditional production methods, results in some of the most classic, ageworthy wines here.
