2015 Saffredi, Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma, Tuscany

Saffredi is the most famous wine from Maremma, and the 2015 is surely the finest yet. It's ripe and plush, but with life and energy. There's excellent complexity on the long finish: this is a triumph from Elisabetta Geppetti.

TASTING NOTES

I love the currant and rosemary character of this wine. Some sage, too. Complex aromas that draw you in. Full body, extremely tight and chewy with a long and intense finish. The tannins are fantastic – so polished. Focused and beautiful. Mineral undertone with ash and hot stone highlighting the dark fruits. It goes on for minutes. Needs three or four years to come together. But a serious red all the way.

Fattoria Le Pupille

Elisabetta Geppetti inherited this estate in 1985, and quickly set it on course for greatness. In 1992, she became president on the local winemakers’ consortium, earning the nickname “the Lady of Morellino”. Her efforts have been complemented by some superb consultants, including Giacomo Tachis, who professionalised production at Tenuta San Guido, Christian Sommer, formerly of Château Latour, and currently Luca d’Attoma, described by Antonio Galloni as “the hottest winemaker in Tuscany right now”.
