2014 Ciauria Etna Rosso, Pietro Caciorgna, Sicily

2014 Ciauria Etna Rosso, Pietro Caciorgna, Sicily

From 70-100 year old vines planted on dark volcanic soils, this is a charming wine. The fruit is fresh and energetic, whilst the six months spent in second-fill oak barrels adds a little texture and spice. Intense, complex and mineral, but amazingly fresh, it’s almost Burgundian in its flavour profile, but at a fraction of the price. It shows exactly why we should all be so excited about Sicily and its wines.

Pietro Caciorgna

The wines from Etna have gained serious plaudits in recent years, as people liken these reds grown on black volcanic soils to Pinot Noir from Burgundy’s revered Côte d’Or. With vines that are 70 to 100 year old planted on their own rootstocks, it makes this a unique proposition in Europe. And Ciaurìa, made by Pietro Caciorgna, a producer now with Sicily interests alongside his Tuscan estate, is a wine that fits the bill.
