2013 Birba, La Gerla, Tuscany

Birba, meaning "rascal", is a real baby Brunello, giving a taste of the vintage before its bigger brothers come out. And the 2013 is a future star: precise and complex, there's crunchy cherries and a hint of tea leaves leading onto a long, fresh, and well structured palate. Bottles of Birba age brilliantly, so don't overlook this wonderful Sangiovese, and its outstanding price point.

La Gerla

Sergio Rossi fell in love with the vineyards of Montalcino, and bought his own estate in 1976. The land was bought off the Biondi-Santi family, the most historic name in Brunello production, and Sergio quickly set about turning his new estate into one of the best performing in the region. He sadly passed away in July 2011, so the 2011 vintage holds a special place at the estate. His work has been ably continued by his wife, Donatella, and his right hand men, Alberto Passeri and Vittorio Fiore.
