2011 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, G.D. Vajra

Aldo Vajra talks most fondly of the Bricco delle Viole site, comparing the precision and elegance like that of a drawing pencil. This famous, high altitude vineyard has again in 2011 produced a mineral and fragrant wine with stunning fruit. Confident but supple texture, mouth-watering fruit and gorgeous lacy acidity, this received 94+ points from Antonio Galloni.

Surprisingly, given their access to great terroir, this estate was only founded in 1972 by Patriarch Aldo. Named after his father Giuseppe Domenico who planted most of the family’s vines, the property sits at one of the highest points in Piedmont, so the grapes ripen later than anywhere else in the region. When these slow-ripening grapes are pressed, it gives their wines a unique, fresh and elegant style. They’re Barolos for Burgundy lovers.
