2010 Barolo Via Nuova, E Pira e Figli, Piedmont

“The 2010 Barolo Via Nuova opens with exquisite inner perfume and sweetness. Crushed rose petals, mint, pine, licorice and sweet red berries all lift out of the glass in a fragrant, aromatically expressive Barolo of the highest level. The 2010 has it all; perfume, fruit, intense crystalline salinity and bracing, chalky, young Nebbiolo tannins that will help the wine age gracefully for years.” Antonio Galloni, vinousmedia.com, 96 points

E Pira e Figli

The Pira family had been winemakers for generations. When Luigi Pira died in 1980, family friends, the Boschis, stepped in to take over, preserving the name of the estate. Young Chiara Boschis arrived with a vision: to make Barolos that show the Nebbiolo grape’s power and ageability, but are drinkable from an earlier stage. Now joined by her brother, she has achieved her goal. With her lightness of touch she creates intense yet elegant Barolos that have to be tried to be believed.
