2010 Barbaresco Rabajà, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

Hailing from one of Barbaresco’s most celebrated vineyards, Verduno’s Rabajà is once again a must buy in 2010: a superlative vintage which combines magically with the estates gracious character. Open top wooden fermenters with submerged cap maceration ensure this stays true to its traditional roots, whilst the concentration and complexity on the palate make this impossible not to like.

Castello di Verduno

Winemaker Mario is fortunate to work with the grapes from top spots Monvigliero in Verduno in the Barolo zone and Rabaja in Barbaresco. He works with the owners, the Burlotto family, who bought the castle in 1909, carrying on a tradition of winemaking dating to 1838, when the King of Savoy owned the castle. They promote wine made traditionally, with long fermentations, use of old Slavonian oak casks and ample ageing. They’ve also taken the initiative to work with Pelaverga, a rare native grape.
