2009 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione, Tuscany

Il Poggione's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a bit of a bruiser today, but it is also one of the few 2009s that is built for the cellar. Smoke, new leather, licorice, spices, scorched earth all wrap around the palate in a dark, voluptuous Brunello with plenty of intrigue. This is one of the richer, more intense wines of the year, but all the elements are very nicely balanced.

Il Poggione

While in wine bigger rarely means better, Il Poggione bucks the trend. They’re one of Montalcino’s biggest names, with production to match. But they’re also the region’s most consistent performer. The estate has been in the hands of the Franceschi family for five generations. However, it’s the winemakers who established the estate’s internationally acclaimed reputation: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci, and now Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.
