2008 Barbaresco, Ovello, Cantina del Pino, Piedmont

Having released the 2009s last year, Renato decided to hold his 2008 Barbaresci back for a further year to allow the wine to soften out from this serious vintage. The extra time in bottle has only added to the sheer depth and polished nature of the fruit from these 70-year-old vines. Multi-layered fruit on the nose with red and black cherries, blueberries and pepper spice; there’s a delectable grip on the palate and superb freshness to match.

Cantina del Pino

This tiny winery holds a special place in the history of Barbaresco. It was first owned by Domizio Cavazza, who first recognised the potential of Barbaresco for the Nebbiolo grape around the turn of the last century. He’s known fondly as ‘the father of Barbaresco.’ The estate was acquired by the great-grandfather of Renato Vacca, who is the current incumbent. Renato takes a step back in the cellar: he lets the wines do their thing. The results are pure, intense, and expressive.
