2006 Barbaresco Rabajà, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

2006 Barbaresco Rabajà, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

Acquiring vineyards in Barbaresco added a new string to the Verduno bow. Torturing the metaphor, Barbaresco can often play second-fiddle to Barolo, but there are some fabulous wines that stand up for themselves on merit. This is one - from the famous Rabajà 'cru' above Martinenga, one of the best sites in Barbaresco - is a bold, open-knit wine, with plenty of ripe but fresh fruit and a juicy character. A lovely, savoury wine that will complement, rather than fight with the food it partners.
