2005 Barolo La Serra, Gianni Voerzio, Piedmont

La Serra lies above the vineyards of Fossati and Case Nere and to the west of fabled Brunate. The colour of the 2005 is deep, with a lovely nose of spice and red fruits. This has the usual La Morra finesse, but in Gianni Voerzio's hands it takes on additional elegance. Gentle, but fine; with real grip, yet not aggressive. Very well balanced, with an impressive finish.

Italian Wine

The Romans' love for wine, attested to by Bacchus-worshipping mosaics, has continued into modern Italian culture, and Italy remains an exciting country for wine lovers. With hundreds of native grape varieties there can be no doubt of Italy’s vinous diversity. What is key is these wines’ symbiosis with Italy’s delicious food. Whether Barolo and white truffles, Chianti and wild boar ragu, or Brunello and a Fiorentine steak, Italy offers some of the most exquisite food and wine matches possible.
