2005 Barolo Arione, Enzo Boglietti, Piedmont

2005 Barolo Arione, Enzo Boglietti, Piedmont

Arione is a very small vineyard of just 4 hectares at the southernmost extremity of Serralunga and, therefore, of the entire Barolo zone. The wines of the commune of Serralunga are renowned for their power and longevity. There is slight tawny edge to the deep colour of this wine in the glass and the nose definitely has more of the tar and asphalt qualities that are classic telltales of high quality of Nebbiolo. There is a lovely fruit quality on the palate, which is powerful and long, yet still restrained. Enzo manages to capture the power of the vineyard and this wine has great density, but it is testament to his great winemaking skill that there is also terrific balance and none of the component parts obtrude. This is very different from the Case Nere, because, despite the power and richness, it is so light on its feet.
