2000 Barbera d'Asti Bricco dell'Uccellone, Braida, Piedmont
Few Piedmontese growers focus on the Barbera grape, let alone afford it the premier vineyard sites normally reserved for Nebbiolo or treat it to twelve months maturation in new oak. The result leaves one wondering why more have not followed the lead of the late Giacomo Bologna, inspiration behind the sensational wines of Braida. Bricco dell'Uccellone is a flagship example of Braida's craft. Vivid garnet in appearance, the nose reveals lively bitter cherry, cranberry and a gently gamey nuance too. Vibrant from start to finish, this shows damson fruit with some gentle toasty, woody nuances picked up from the barrel. Impressive, unusual and rewarding. Enjoy after decanting, with game, beef or pork.
