2006 Único,Vega-Sicilia, Ribera del Duero

Unico is arguably Spain's greatest wine, and you can see why with this release. The team here elected to release the 2007 and 2008 before the 2006, and the tightly wound nature of the 2006 gives a good idea of exactly why. This is savoury yet spiced, with a rich core of dark, brooding fruit. The finish is mineral and remarkably long: this is a wine to put to the back of the cellar and forget about!

2006 Único,Vega-Sicilia, Ribera del Duero

Vega Sicilia is to Spain what the First Growths are to France. Its story is well known - a Spanish winemaker trained in Bordeaux and returned to his homeland with a few vines to blend with the local Tempranillo. The flagship wine, Unico, marks the first time Bordeaux varieties were used in Ribera del Duero. They also produce a second wine, Valbuena 5°, so-called because it’s kept in the cellar for 5 years before release, and stablemates Pintia and Alion.
