2001 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, R. López Heredia, Rioja

2001 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, R. López Heredia, Rioja

The Tondonia vineyard was first established by founder Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta in 1913. Since then, it has become the most famous of the bodega's vineyards with the Gran Reserva being seen as the jewel in the estate's crown. The 2001 is indeed a jewel: there's a concentrated core of ripe black fruit, with supple tannins and a Tex-Mex like spiciness from oak (think cumin and ancho chilli). Around the core is a damp earth character and some crunchy cranberry acidity. There's also the trademark Tondonia freshness on the lenghty finish, making for a truly delightful wine..
