When the opportunity came up to offer one of Joh. Jos. Prum's fantastic rieslings it seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. This eccentric and enigmatic producer must surely rank as one of the world's leading producers of Riesling. In the last three years out of four he has produced Germany's top-voted Spatlese. 2004 looks to be a particularly exciting vintage with lovely balance to the wines. The 2004 Spatlese displays incredible intensity of fruit on both nose and palate with the classic riesling aromas of honey and floral notes. Although only a spatlese there is a broad tropical fruit note of botrytis on the palate which, combined with some subtle pepper and spice notes, adds layers of complexity. As one would expect there is a firm backbone of acidity to this wine which bodes well for the future although it does have the opulence and intensity of fruit to be enjoyed in its youth. Once again it seems that Manfred Prum has crafted a truly awe-inspiring wine that will go from strength to strength with time.
