2023 Hermannshöhle Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Dönnhoff, Nahe

There’s a story behind the name of most vineyards and Hermannshöhle is no exception – derived from the Greek god of travellers and messengers there is a small cave (höhle) in the middle of the hillside. Considered the best site in the Nahe, a “proper grand cru”, the south-facing slope with a mixture of blue and grey slate yields a Riesling of power and refinement. This has laser focus, and an intensity that builds in the palate. The 2022 is a remarkable wine with notes of white flowers, white grapefruit, and hints of ripe stone fruit. The focus for now is on the mineral core to the wine which leaves a bright, saline and almost endless finish.
