2006 Clos des Goisses, Champagne Philipponnat

With very fine bubbles, and an enchanting creamy texture, the 2006 is impressive Champagne. The palate is dense and concentrated: if you prefer Champagne with the toasty, honeyed notes of age, it would benefit from a few years’ of patience, (or decades, if you can wait). This is one of our very favourite Champagnes thanks to its complexity, intensity and persistence. A connoisseur’s choice, it remains one of Champagne’s finest wines.

2006 Clos des Goisses, Champagne Philipponnat
Champagne Philipponnat

While other Champagne houses have only recently discovered the benefits of bottling wines made from individual vineyards separately, Philipponnat made their first wine, from Clos des Goisses, in 1935. It’s one of the region’s steepest plots, rising up from the River Marne. And this steepness, combined with its south-facing aspect, means that the grapes can ripen more than most other spots in the region. It’s one of the most powerful, consistent and ageworthy Champagnes out there.
