While other Champagne houses have only recently discovered the benefits of bottling wines made from individual vineyards separately, Philipponnat made their first wine, from Clos des Goisses, in 1935. It’s one of the region’s steepest plots, rising up from the River Marne. And this steepness, combined with its south-facing aspect, means that the grapes can ripen more than most other spots in the region. It’s one of the most powerful, consistent and ageworthy Champagnes out there.
